It is likewise time for calling a halt when the grasping attitude of railroads and smelters slow up and endanger the greatest of Utah's industries mining. It is reported, and no doubt on good authority, that there are scores of dead locomotives in the railroad yards at Pocatello, Idaho, because of the falling off in freight shipments, and everyone realizes that the reason freight shipments have decreased is because of the excessive freight rates which the railroads are asking. In the Tintio District, and in every other mining district of the west, mining operations have been slowed up materially, and in many instances stopped entirely, not because of a scarcity of ore but on account of the greed of railroads and smelting officials. Everyone realizes that under existing conditions it requires a much larger sum than usual to haul and to treat a ton of ore and that the hauling and smelting expenses can be lowered by moving more material and by operating reduction plants at, or near capacity. There is but one way to bring out the additional tonnage required to operate economically and that is lower charges all along the line. There is a point beyond which it is unprofitable to raise rates and both railroads and smelters, in their greed, long ago passed that point. 1MW4WWMWWM Friday, Febraaiy - EUREKA PEOPLE SHOULD BOOST FOB NEW BAN!
