Show Page 2 Thursday, November 24, 2011 The Gunnison Valley Gazette 1800 and still going strong Gunnison Give Back Give-Away Kirsten Olsen just donated her 1800th knitted baby hat to Gunnison Valley Hospital. Kirsten, of Gunnison, started as a volunteer at the hospital seven years ago. One day she overheard someone complain that the hats the hospital put on the new born babies always fell off. This gave Kirsten an idea. She went home and knitted a hat to try on one of the new borns. The fit was great and Kirsten has been making little hats ever since. Kirsten donated her 1000th hat back in July of 2008 and has made 800 since then. She alternates hat colors, making a blue one and then a pink one. Several years ago her late husband Jorgan suggested that Kirsten knit GVH onto each hat and GVH has been a part of the design ever since. Kirsten said, "I keep my hands busy knitting when I'm watching television or while I have time to fill." Kirsten has been knitting for 75 years. She began knitting in second grade in her native Denmark and she plans to keep on knitting and donating hats. Shop at home this holiday season and you could win some great prizes!
