GUS presents Les Miserables This week Gunnison Valley High School presents Les Miserables School Edition, which, according to director Mark Lyons, "is the most difficult show we've ever attempted since I've been at the high school." Since Les Miserables is one of his favorite shows, Lyons said that for years he's been asking Jody Allred, music director, "Do we have the voices to do Les Miserables yet?" This year, the answer was yes. Les Miserables holds the record as the longest running musical in the world. To date it has been seen by nearly 60 million people in 42 countries and 21 languages. Last year, it celebrated its 25th anniversary. Ten years ago, the authors approved creating Les Miserables School Edition, which is an abridged version of the Broadway musical. The three hour show was cut to a running time just over two hours, "while carefully maintaining the integrity of one the greatest musicals ever written," states the MTI (Music Theater International) website. As part of the contract to do the school edition, directors must verify that only high school, middle school or elementary school students will perform in it. "This special edition of Les Miserables was not conceived or developed for performance by adults or college students," the website says. The MTI website also contains a map and a list of every school currently performing this show. During the dates of the GVHS production, November 17-19, four other high schools, in New York, Minnesota, Illinois, and Georgia will also be performing the show. There have been over 2,000 productions of this musical in the UK, US and Australia, making it the most successful musical ever produced in schools. "In looking at other high school's productions on you tube, I was impressed that no matter what the scenery or costumes were, the music and the message are so powerful, I was moved," said Anita Lyons, assistant director. "It gave me hope that our production would also be a success because the message will carry it." The musical is based on the book published by Victor Hugo in 1862. Hugo witnessed an impoverished man, arrested for stealing a loaf of bread, stand on the street corner as an ornate carriage stopped. Inside was a wealthy woman dressed in velvet playing with a child dressed in furs. The man stared at the woman in the carriage, but she was totally unaware of him. Hugo wrote, "The moment he became aware of her existence, while she remained unaware of his, a catastrophe was inevitable."
