Show Thursday, November 10, 2011 Schools Financial Literacy at the high school It's the end of the quarter in Mr. Burrell's Financial Literacy class. This means the end of the "Stock Market Game." At the first of the quarter each student in the class selected a stock and invested an imaginary $500 to purchase stock. Just of few of the stocks that were purchased were Delta, GM, Google, Zions Bank, Costco, Wal-Mart and McDonalds. During the quarter the students followed their stock to see how much money they would earn or loose. Now at the end of the quarter something unique occurred. Their teacher, Mr Burrell, has been playing this game with students for several years, and for the first time ever, every student in the class made money. Granted, Damian Otten only made $8.05 with his Honda Motor Company stock, but Miranda McArthur made $487.06 on her Novell stock. Some other stocks that did great were Ty Blackburn with Sears, Kasey , Bartholomew with Delta, and Chad Boore with GM. Some other stocks that did not make much were Austin Kitchell with Amazon, Taylor Burrell with McDonalds and Ed Polanshek with Verizon. After looking back several years and showing the students the past charts from their classmates since 2007 every other group had several stocks where students lost money, sometimes several hundred dollars of loss. GVHS Top DOG What does this mean? Mr. Burrell admits he is no financial guru, but I would like to think that things are looking up. He says, "Now don't go out and purchase a bunch of stock and come egg my house later when you lose money. I just wanted to share this because it is the first time it has ever happened." Congratulations to Miranda, she won a free Subway sandwich from Mr. Burrell for winning the game. Hannah Childs and Rylan Anderson have been chosen by the faculty and administration to receive the Top Dog Award at GVHS. She is the senior class president, a member of National Honor Society, and a peer judge/youth court coordinator for GVHS Youth Court. She has been on the girls varsity tennis team for the past two years, this year receiving Academic-All State with a GPA of 3.9. She has received her Young Women Recognition award and Individual Leadership award for cheer 2010, and is Sterling Scholar for Political Science. Hannah attended Girls State this past June and was selected to travel to Valley Forge in April for a Leadership/History scholarship. Rylan Anderson is the son of Mark and Deah Anderson. Rylan has been involved in many activities throughout high school including football, baseball, National Honor Society, and is currently serving as this year's student body president. He received the Academic All-State Award for football this year. He has earned his Eagle Scout award and is active in his local ward. He also spent a week this summer in Joplin, Missouri helping with the tornado relief effort. In additional to sports and academic involvement, he also finds time to work after school and on weekends.
