Show Sports Page 8 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Eagles bowl over Bulldogs By Brent Boswell No other team in the region has worked as hard and come so far as the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs. No other coaching staff in the region has dedicated more time and personal resources than our Gunnison Valley Football Staff, yet, here they sit at an unexpected and undeserving crossroads. Their goal of a winning season and to excel during the post season playoffs is in serious jeopardy. Or is it? The truth is, they can still do it. It's not too late but now it's going to come down to the wire. They still have three tough, but winnable region games before the playoffs and I for one think our GV Bulldogs are up to the challenge. They are doing the work, they're certainly not slackers. They each just need to dig deep inside and learn who they really are, and recognize just what it is they have toiled become—a winning team! They're like the Little Engine That Could; only our guys are no cartoon chu-chu train, they are fit and strong, more like a locomotive trained for the gridiron. They only need to build up enough steam to simply believe, and we as fans The American Leadership Academy Eagles overcame a 14 point deficit at the half to beat the Gunnison Valley Bulldogs 21-14 in last Friday's homecoming game. The opening kick was up and our Bulldogs were off to a very aggressive start against the Eagles. It appeared the adjustments gleaned from last week's outing against Millard were just the ticket our boys in blue needed for a coveted homecoming "W" but in the end we came up short. There is not a boy on the team, a coach on the staff, or even a fan in the stands who wouldn't call Friday's game a heartbreaker, unless, that is...are you ready for this...they were rooting for the visiting squad. Life isn't always fair, and that sentiment certainly applies to high school sports. If the team that worked the hardest all summer, that woke up the earliest to lift weights during the school year, and made the most of every practice always won, then our boys would be undefeated. 1110 i Thursday, September 29, 2011 Rifle/Muzzleloader Pre-Season Tune-up Bring your rifle/muzzleloader in to be: ✓ CLEANED ✓ INSPECTED ✓ SIGHTED IN Make sure everything is in good working order for your big hunt!! Two tough losses for the Bulldogs Sara Brown and Nilsson each put shots on goal late in the first half, but with just a couple minutes left, Manti scored on a long shot from a tough angle for a 2-1 halftime lead. The Templars scored again just six minutes into the second half, and the Bulldogs struggled to find any room offensively. Manti added two late goals for the 5-1 win. "It was almost a mirror image of the Grand game," coach Jensen said. "I thought it was a pretty good first half. We controlled the ball well and we had some looks. But we weren't adjusting, we weren't giving each other help at the right times." "The hardest part about a week like this is that we have a capable team," Jensen said."But we're not successful when we don't play as a unit. We've got a lot of good things going for us, we just need to buckle down and work hard." The Bulldogs defensive back line continues to impress coaches, fans, and opponents. "Our two marking backs, Millie Hammond and Sarah Miller, and our middle defender, Kayla Peterson, they do a sensational job," Jensen said. This year, Hammond took on the assignment of playing one-onone defense against Manes top offensive player and held her scoreless in two games. I caught up with Gunnison's speedy junior midfielder, Brianna "Starky" Starks, at practice this past Monday. Starky plays the "holding midfielder" position, which basically means she has to be everywhere at once. "If the ball's back in our defensive side of the field, I'm back there helping out the defenders," Starky said. "As soon as we start back up the field, I run up and help the offense try to score." by MITCH PETERSON With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Gunnison High School girls soccer team holds onto third place in the 2A East Region, despite last week's losses to Grand and Manti. At Moab against the region's second place Grand Lady Red Devils last Tuesday, September 20th, Bulldog forwards Sara Nilsson and Paula Ferracini each scored one goal, but Grand ended up with the 4-2 victory. Last Thursday the Bulldogs traveled to Ephraim for a re-match with Manti. The Templars sit atop the region standings and won the first meeting between these county rivals a few weeks ago in Gunnison. This one was close until Manti pulled away late in the second half to win it 5-1. The Bulldogs always seem to play well in Moab, and they had some chances against the Devils. "We fought goal for goal until that last twenty minutes at Grand," said Gunnison head coach Jaron Jensen. "Early on, we had some good possession, we had some good shots." Grand scored first, but the Bulldogs soon tied it at 1-1. "That's when it kind of started going downhill," Jensen said. "At that point we just stopped passing where we should, and we had some other breakdowns," Against Manti last Thursday, the teams traded early goals. Manti took a 1-0 lead in just the second minute of the game. But in the 11th minute, the Bulldogs weaved into Manti territory. Chansey Caldwell took control of the ball about 20 yards out, dribbled a couple of times, and fired a hard shot into the center of Manti's net for her second goal of the year, tying the match at 1-1 and ending Manti's three game shutout streak. The Lady Bulldogs host North Sevier and Grand next week to wrap up the regular season. She says this may be her best season yet. "We're a good team. We can finish high in the standings, and we can go a long way in the playoffs." Starky always plays hard and has fun, because she knows how quickly time flies. "I almost started crying when I realized how fast the season is going by," she said. She encourages folks to come out and watch the Lady Bulldogs showcase their skills. "We're doing great this year. We need fans to come out and see us play. It's even more fun when there's a big crowd," Starky said. The Bulldogs continue their region season this week. They'll host the Richfield Lady Wildcats on Tuesday (results unavailable) then they're in Monroe on Thursday, September 29th, to play the South Sevier Lady Rams. Next Tuesday, October 4th, the Bulldogs host the pesky North Sevier Lady Wolves, then they'll wrap up the regular season two days later at home against Grand. Just past the midway point in the season, Manti leads the 2A East Region at 6-0-0 and 18 points, while Grand is second at 5-0-0 and 15 points. (Teams get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 for a loss. Standings are based on those points). Gunnison is in third place at 3-3-0, 9 points; Richfield is fourth at 2-3-0, 6 points; South Sevier is fifth at 1-5-0, 3 points; and North Sevier is sixth at 0-6-0.
