I will not complain about summer and it's scorching heat. These thoughts keep rolling through my head like an arcade ride at the carnival. But, try as I might, I can not stop thinking about cooler temperatures and the activities that come with them. Each fall, as we traipse around the hills ferreting out our next adventure, we are vigilant in our constant search for the perfect Christmas tree. That's right, many times over the years, while we were hunting deer or elk, we have located the Christmas tree that would later adorn our home during the holiday season. Within our family this activity has become somewhat of a competition, with each of us trying to find the perfect Christmas tree ahead of the others. Another tradition I look forward to each fall is our annual home made gift drawing. Each year we put everyone's name in a hat. Then we draw a persons ourtesy J Shooting clay pigeons on New Year's Day. name, mark it on a paper, discard it and draw another name. The second person drawn becomes the recipient of the first persons gift. Once it is decided who gives to whom, the real fun begins. You see, each gift must be home made. I marvel each Christmas eve at the creativity and love that goes into these most personal of gifts. Wall hangings, birdhouses and calendars with birthdays and anniversaries written on the appropriate dates to name just a few, My next favorite winter time family activity is our annual celebration of Jantz Jensen'6 birthday on New Year's Day. We build a huge bonfire, sip hot chocolate and roast marshmallows. Even though the temperatures are typically frigid, we have a fantastic time. We visit, catching up on current events and planning future outings. When enough snow is present to allow it, Almon Fullmer provides rides for the young and young at heart, on a sled of his own unique design, tethered to his four wheeler. Every time he does, he has people standing in line awaiting their turn. Towards midday we gather our shotguns and form a horizontal line. Rohn usually starts things off by casting the first clay pigeon airborne. If the first shooter in line hit's the target, they remain in the game. If ttiey miss and the next shooter connects, they are out until the next game. This usually sparks a surge of friendly competition. If memory serves me, Arno has taken top honors the last two years. My loving mother often cautions me to not wish my life away. So, with that excellent advise in mind, I will not complain about summer and it's scorching heat. But, within the confines of my own psyche I long for cooler temperatures. Advertise Your Business in Gunnison Valley's Hometown Newspaper! The Gunnison Valley Gazette!
