Show Volume XXX Issue VIII The Ogden Valley News Page 9 December 1, 2023 Historic Pineview Hotel and Resort and the Wheeler Creek Dam Pine View Lodge, also known as Pineview Hotel-Resort, was built by Moroni E. Wilcox in the mouth of Wheeler Creek near the shore of the Pioneer Electric Power Company’s dam, which was constructed in 1897-1898. Mr. Wilcox purchased 600 acres in 1898 in the mouth of Wheeler Creek, establishing a camp and later a resort/hotel, which was operational until 1934 when construction on the Pineview Dam commenced. The name Pineview Reservoir took its name from the name of Mr. Wilcox’s resort— Pine View Lodge/Hotel-Resort. Many historical photos depict the Pineview Hotel-Resort’s guests boating, or rowing, on the Pioneer Electric Power Dam at Wheeler Creek. Remains of the old Wheeler Creek Dam are still visible just upstream from the current Ogden Canyon Water Treatment Facility. Utah’s first hydroelectric power plant was built on the Ogden River by Ogden City Electric Co. in 1883. Later, at the mouth of Ogden Canyon (12th Street and Harrison Blvd.), the Pioneer Electric Power Company built a significantly larger, more technologically sophisticated power plant. Ogden River and Wheeler Creek water was piped from Wheeler Creek Dam at the top of Ogden Canyon, a distance of 31,600 feet, to the power plant at the mouth of Ogden Canyon. Electric power was then transmitted throughout Ogden and as far as Salt Lake City. Today, water from Pineview Reservoir is still piped through an updated pipeline down Ogden Canyon to the historic 1896 Pioneer Electric Power Plant, now owned and operated by Pacific Corp, where it continues to generate local power. Note: Narrative, map, and photos courtesy of Dave Martin of Eden. Notice from this 1896 map section, the Pioneer Electric Power Co. proposes a much larger reservoir 40 plus years ahead of Pineview Reservoir’s 1937 completion. A thank you to Dave Martin of Eden for submitting the map, photos, and narrative. Historical photos of the Pineview Dam.
