Weber Schools Celebrate Hope Week On a Friday after school, October 6, a group of young friends organized and ran a power wheels race. The track was set up in the field of one of the parents in Eden, and was marked with barriers and yellow caution tape. The By Kera Erickson The week of October 2 through October 6 was Hope Week for all Weber School District schools that feed into Weber High School. Hope Week started under the direction of Velden Wardle. Wardle was the principal of Weber High School at that time. All schools within the area are invited to celebrate together as a community to promote hope and connection. The ultimate goal of Hope Week is to prevent youth suicide. This year’s Hope Week started off with a Light the Night event. The plan was to have spotlights shining from the peak of Ben Lomond. This year proved to be dark, cloudy, wet, and cold. Shane Rasmussen, the principal from Pioneer Elementary was the only person brave enough to summit the peak. Rasmussen had a spotlight shining from the top. In addition, the Major Brent Taylor Foundation provided a spotlight that pointed from Weber High School up towards Ben Lomond Peak. Students, families, and community members were invited to a viewing party here in the Valley at Liberty Park. Weber CTC (Communities That Care) provided free donuts and hot chocolate. Students viewing from the park shined lights towards the peak, through the youth also arranged for pizza, popcorn, and cloudy, dark, night in hopes of signaling their drinks for the spectators! location. Tuesday night there was a mental health fair held at Weber High School. There were booths, food trucks, and mental health resources and information available. Hope Squad members from all the schools had booths with uplifting activities. There was a presentation by author Richard Paul Evans from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Weber High School auditorium. Weber CTC sponsored the author presentation. During the week, schools held their own fun activities to celebrate Hope Week. At Valley Elementary, the Hope Squad held recess games for their classmates and handed out bracelets and stickers. Snowcrest Hope Squad students presented a Hope Week Kick-off assembly for Valley Elementary students. Snowcrest Hope Squad presented positive messages, skits, and a dance off. The theater class from Snowcrest also acted out a Weber High students help with Hope Week. skit to help remind kids to be kind to each other. Weber High School Hope Squad held a suicide prevention training for its members. They also presented an assembly for Green Acres Elementary. During the week, they held lunch activities. Some of the activities included having students write their stressors on paper and then sending them through the paper-shredder, making a paper chain listing all the things that brought them hope, holding yard games to help students relax, and writing and delivering uplifting notes to classmates. One of the resources presented during hope week was Safe UT. If your child or teen needs help with depression, anxiety, self-harm, or mental health issues, or is experiencing loss or grief, check out the Safe UT program. Contact Safe Ut at 833-3SAFEUT, download the App, or visit SafeUt.org. Services provided include access to free licensed counselors who provide crisis intervention and emotional support.
