Slade Family Offers Community New Cow-Share Program The Slade family farm in Huntsville is beginning a cow-share program that will make raw milk available to friends and neighbors in Ogden Valley. Josh Slade grew up on a dairy farm in central Utah where his family sold raw milk from a road-side dairy store. Soon, after buying their small farm in Huntsville, Josh and his growing family (number seven arriving in September) began milking cows and making cheese. Now the Slades want to make raw milk and cheesemaking available to their neighbors and friends through a cow-share program. Under Utah’s cow-share laws, a farmer can offer milk to participants in a program from up to two milking cows per farm. Recently, the Slades opened a $5 farm store at 8870 E. 500 S. in Huntsville where they offer free-range eggs. Eggs are $5 a dozen, milk will be $5 a half-gallon and soon participants in their cow-share program will be able to purchase curds, cheese, ground beef, seasonal vegetables, and fruits from the Slade farm. The Slade farm is located in the same place as the annual Huntsville Charity Yard Sale where the Slades raise Dexter cattle, milk Jersey cows, and manage a herd of Kune Kune pigs—along with flocks of geese and free-range pasture chickens. Josh will also be offering cheesemaking classes this fall where participants will learn how to make queso fresco, cheddar, tomme, mascarpone, and more. The Slade’s Jersey cows are pasture fed in spring, summer, and fall; and fed alfalfa and grass hay from the Valley during colder months. Because it is not homogenized, raw milk needs to be shaken before use, or you can let the cream rise to the top and it can be skimmed to use as cream for whipped cream, butter, and a host of other things. If you are interested in participating in this cow-share program, please call or text Josh at 801-231-3341 or email him at fbslade@gmail. com. |
