Show Volume XXX Issue IX The Ogden Valley News Page 5 July 15, 2023 Local Author Releases New Short Story: Heimweh Local Ogden Valley resident and author Alex Birkbeck has just released his 昀椀rst short story titled “Heimweh.” A gritty, down-to-earth story about the brutality of war and how far a person will go for his loved ones and his fellow man. Alex had a great-great grandfather who fought and, unfortunately, died in the First World War so he took this to heart while writing his book, hoping readers will appreciate the young generation of soldiers who perished in that conflict. The word Heimweh is German, meaning homesick. The story is about a married man with a child on the way when he receives his draft notice. In combat, he finds himself in a trench fighting for his life every day. All the while, he is clinging to the hope that he will return home to his family. In this book you’ll encounter action, thrills, a little bit of romance, and maybe a lesson or two along the way. Alex, who grew up in the Valley, says that he has liked to write since he was a kid, having a dad who writes, as well. “Everyone in my family is an artist in some way. I’d say my family and loved ones are my inspiration for writing.” Heimweh is available at alexbirkbeckbooks. simdif.com or on Alex’s writing Instagram @ alexbwriting. Alex is also known to sometimes have a booth at local markets so keep an eye out for him there!
