Show Volume XXX Issue IV The Ogden Valley News Page 11 May 1, 2023 Behind the Scenes at Huntsville’s Compass Rose Lodge By Student Reporters Maryanne Hale and Scarlett Hyatt We recently had the pleasure of interviewing River Hide and Ashley Smoot at Compass Rose Lodge, located at 198 S. 7400 E. in Huntsville, Utah. The owners are Jeff and Bonnie Hyde who designed and decorated the impressive buildings with a lot of input from their two talented sons River and Dakota. This is a part of our series for our “Behind the Scenes” articles. First, we entered the coffee shop, the seats were cool antique ski benches. The number one coffee there is called first lift coffee. It is the favorite of skiers heading to the mountains and early risers coming to curl up for a nice cup of coffee. They have high quality coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. On the wall they have all sorts of legendary family members who are amazing skiers and tons more antiques. Next, we are in the lobby, which is extremely cozy, decorative, and very aesthetic. It is a very nice gathering space. In the lobby we saw one of the first ski lift chairs in the world. Fun facts: In the lobby they have very cool oil lights that came from a bomb shelter at Hill Air Force Base and to prove it, Compass Rose left a little bit of oil at the bottom of each glass globe. The Hyde’s relatives were famous skiers in the Winter Olympics ski team, like family member Dean Perkins. Did you know that there used to be an elementary school nicknamed the Purple Prison that was built right where the Compass Rose Lodge is standing now? It was called the Purple Prison because they wanted to paint it so everyone in the town donated their leftover paint. They mixed it all up and it came out purple! Compass Rose has had three hallmark movies filmed there and one thriller. Since it was during the COVID pandemic, the actors and actresses stayed in complete quarantine there with the lodge even doing their laundry and preparing all meals. (We don’t feel sorry for them! What a wonderful place to have to stay!) Compass Rose Lodge was finished in 2018. It only took nine months to build. They were so lucky that they finished right before COVID. The Hydes are related to John Prine, the country singer. Pictures of him are on the wall too. As you go upstairs there is a grill plate of a jeep that’s a wall decoration. Have you ever wondered why all jeeps River Hyde demonstrates the workings of the telescope at Compas Rose Lodge to Maryanne Hale and Scarlett Hyatt. have seven slits on their grill plate? It is because a jeep is the first vehicle to go to all seven continents. Then, we went upstairs to the hotel rooms and saw these hooks by every door that are really railroad spikes. They would hang breakfast on bags on the hooks then guests could come out of their rooms and find a bag of breakfast hanging on the hooks. We walked into a room and it was beautiful. It had a king-sized bed and everything! It made us want to spend the night. It looked so cozy! Following that, we went into a different building where there was an event room, and outside a gathering area with teepees. The event room can fit up to 40 people and is a cool place to rent for your own gathering even including the teepees. Down the hall from the event room, we went to the bunkrooms. The bunkrooms were amazing. When we opened the door, the room was filled with enchantment. The bunk beds were made with beautiful wood and there were yummy treats on each bed. And finally, the observatory. The observatory was absolutely amazingly amazing. Under the observatory, there is a ten-ton beam of cement holding up the telescope. That takes care of any vibrations that would distort what you might see in the sky. There are two telescopes: one 16 inches, and one 8 inches. It was amazing. River opened the roof and he told us that you could see the Andromeda galaxy, the rings of Saturn. It was truly awesome. Thank you for reading our third behind the scenes article.
