Solo Kayak Trip Slide Show & Adventure Presentation April 14 in Eden Tired of the Snow? Interested in another on-the water adventure? Come to Mountain Arts and Music sponsored lecture on one woman’s solo kayak trip along the Inside Passage on Friday April 14. Susan Conrad is visiting Ogden Valley and has a story to share with us. Susan is going to take us on a 1,200-mile trip along the inside passage of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska in her 21’ wide purple Kayak. This is a presentation of a multi-dimensional journey where we not only experience her sheer joy of paddling but also learn that the greatest gift of a long wilderness journey is that of the community and inspiration one finds along the way. Come learn about Susan’s efforts to give back to the fragile marine ecosystems she’s been exploring for years, and her quest to follow in the paddle strokes of a late, legendary female explorer whose paddle was finally laid to rest when she was nearly 90 Kayaker Susan Conrad. years old! Any human in a tiny vessel along a perilous 1,200-mile stretch of the Inside Passage is bound to have stories! Susan Conrad’s stories are not just filled with intrigue and adventure, but they have heart, inspiration, and gratitude. Susan will share stories and images of her 2022 solo, 78-day sea kayak expedition up the Inside Passage from San Juan Island to Sitka, Alaska, comparing and contrasting it with her 2010 expedition. Relive the trip with Susan as she shares experiences of paddling marathon distances for days on end, struggling to interact with the sea on its terms, forging friendships with quirky people in remote locations, pretending not to be intimidated by 700-pound grizzly bears and 40-ton whales, and living her dream. Highlights will include her efforts to raise awareness of British Columbia’s proposed Marine Protected Areas in the Great Bear Rainforest, and retracing the paddle strokes of the late, great Audrey Sutherland, the grand dame of expedition paddling. Susan has done this trip twice, has authored three books about paddling the Inside Passage, and loves sharing her personal stories to inspire people and demonstrate the power of self-belief and tenacity in order to accomplish anything you want in life! This adventure lecture is sponsored by Mountain Arts and Music and will be held Friday, April 14 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mt. Luxury Grand Hall (3632 Wolf Creek Dr. in Eden). Peddler’s café will open at 6:00 for purchase of beverages and light snacks for nourishment during the presentation. Donations for Susan will be requested. Octo “Snow” Genarian Sets New Record by Skiing His Age By Kathleen Vanderwall Octo “snow” genarian Stuart Reed has been skiing for 70 years. He has a second home near Huntsville and says he has loved skiing at Snowbasin and Powder Mountain for over twenty years. He easily achieved his 75 days of skiing pin earlier this season. While Snowbasin set a new snow depth record April 3, 2023 with 504 inches, Stuart celebrated by setting his own personal milestone: Skiing his age—86-days this season. Stuart grew up in New Jersey and attended college in New Hampshire where he majored in Agriculture and minored in, you guessed it, skiing. Congratulations Stuart!
