Mr. Joseph Selig, who has been for the past Year engaged in merchandizing in Beaver, has bought the Iron Springs property, nd also the. principal coal mines at Cedar City, twelve miles from the Springs, and contemplates the erection of works on & large scale within the next twelve months. _. The bullion shipments from Silver Reef, through Wella, Fargo & Co.'s express, for the week ending to-day, aggreghted $29,773. This year commences well, anyhow. Foreman Gamble, of the Thompson & MeNally,is s temporary widower. Mrg, G. is paying a visit to her parents, who reside at Fort Ephraim, Sanpete county. Messrs. Utsh's bullion product for the past eleveh./ years foots up nearly $47,000,000. If it wasn't ® holey land, as the brethren claim, we shouldn't be able to boast any such figures ae these, Observattons taken from the rear door of the Miver office demonstrate that the white davotees of the opium habit find demfo:table retreats in Chinatown, devoted tothe use of the drag. * There will be an ectipes of the aun between Sand 4 o'clock to-morrow (Sunday) afternoon, if the heavenlybodyoligiats tell the truth. Trot out your smoked glass and see what the thing amounts to. Tron county have atiracted attention for the past twenty-five years, but it was useless to attempt the mannfacture of the metal previous to tie advent of the railroad, though an |. attempt fo do so was made at Cedar City about twenty-five years azo. At that time the Ghureh spent $150.0) trying 10 make iron. The experiment: failed, and if it had! not, there is not a probability that the enterprise coald have been made to pay. The local demand for iron then would not have’ paid the interest on the money invested if. every dollar had’ been clear profit. But. railroad ‘facilities have changed all this, and there is little doubt at present of the success of Mr. Selig’s venture, if the same be wisely managed. At Iron Springs Mr, Selig has millions of.4ons of iron ore, and at Cedar City as promising coal mines as can be found in Uiah pr perhaps in the United States. In fact, the coal field is limitless. _We think the same may be said of the iron ore--iig quantity is beyond estimate. These facts accepted, we have onlyta inquire what the demand for iron produced at this point is likely to be. This will depend almost entirely upon the extension of the Utah Southern to California and the Pacific ocean, If this road is completed in its southwest course to the, Pacific ocean, or even connected with the Southern Pacific R. R., it will give an outlet and, as we believe, open up a market for the Iron connty i-on that will. make the investment a profitable one for all time to come. Mr, Selig informs us that the Cedar coal cokes readily, and is pronounced by the ‘amelters at Frisco to bea very superior ariicie of biituminong coal. The iron ore is magneiic and hematite, the fo:mer assaying 70 per cent. and the latter 45 percent. Mr. Seliz’s plan, as we unde-gtand it, is to enlist Eastern capital and gécure a la-ge working fund. The field if a big one, and Mr. 8. is one of those megf who believe in “plowing to the ends ofthe rows.’ If there is money in xiensive operations at Iron Sp.ings anticipated in the nea¥ fiuure. - -————--— { Dr. Higgins has removed his office from J, ¥.
