Teacher Cheryl Nielson receives Crystal Apple Spanish Fork's Cheryl Nielson is this year's Crystal Apple recipient for Cherry Creek Elementary in Springville. She was voted by the teachers at her school because of her positive attitude, problemsolving skills and love of her students. One of her colleagues said, "Cheryl is always thinking about the individual child. She wants to understand each child and how to help them succeed around their peers. She has a great attitude with her students and colleagues. Cheryl goes the extra mile." Another teacher said, "Cheryl really makes sure that students go above and beyond 'just getting it.' With faculty members, she is a team-player who is willing to share great teaching ideas. She puts 100 percent into her work." Cheryl graduated from UVSC (now UVU). She student taught with Mr. Travis Proctor at Cherry Creek. Since being hired, she has continued to teach fifth grade. In June 2009, she earned her master's degree from SUU. Currently she is enrolled in an ESL Endorsement course. Cheryl feels at home at Cherry Creek. Her father, Mr. Lundgreen, taught there when it was Springville Middle School. She is married to Cordell Nielson. They have three children: Anya, Shayla and Ethan. Her parents are Dennis and Deann Lundgreen. She enjoys playing the piano, sewing and playing the Wii with her family. East Meadows Courtesy photos HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Tuesday, March 2 was Dr. Seuss' birthday. We read his masterpiece books in all our classes and had fun activities to celebrate. At the end of the day, the Larsen PTA gave each student a brownie. Mrs. Eckhardt's Kindergarten class made hats like the Cat in the Hat. Every year, Principal Johnson gives out a Dr. Seuss book to random students. This year he gave two per grade level. The lucky winners got copy of Dr Seuss' 'The Foot Book." Courtesy photo DON'T PUFF: BYU took its "Buff Don't Puff" program to East Meadows on Thursday, Feb. 25. This program involves student athletes from BYU going to local schools and giving a presentation on the dangers of smoking. The athletes serve as positive role models to elementary students and the student athletes enjoy serving the community and teaching kids about this serious health hazard. Pictured with Bob Wakefield and BYU student athletes are: Janette Smith, Natalie Reese, Daniel Leon and CJ Wood. Foothills HEROIC: UVU's Know Greater Heroes thrilled and motivated Larsen students on Thursday. The UVU Cheerleaders and Athletics department visit schools to encourage making good choices, staying away from drugs and living an active lifestyle. Their program includes singing, music, dancing and skits. Kindergarten Register your kindergartener for the 2010-11 school year on Wednesday, March 23, 2010 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at your neighborhood school. Please bring the student's birth certificate and immunization records. The Sentinel BOOKS Courtesy photo START YOUR ENGINES: On Feb. 26 Foothills Elementary kindergartners paraded through the halls to show off their creative vehicle for their annual Kindy 500.
