Show Guardian of Your Community News Sentinel WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 20Q9 • A l l Ranch Rodeo Barry Dalton / The Sentinel GOAL! Salem's Kallee Wilson sends a shot past a wincing Union player in the Skyhawks' first home game Aug. 11, 2009. Lady Skyhawks start season with wins The County Fair Ranch Rodeo was held Friday, Aug. 14. Ten teams of four people competed in various events from wild horse roping to steer mugging. Brief but heavy rain showers sent spectators running for cover, but didn't dampen the rodeo action. For the second consecutive year, the team of Chris Hanks, Nick Hanks, Jed Corless and Cody Bradford came in first. Second place went to Troy Fowkes, Deven Day, Pete Poulsen and Spencer Oldham. The third-place team was Alvin Baum, Dave Haskell, Zeb Christmas and Jason Christensen. Fourth place went to Mike Walberger, Cody Wrathel, Ryan Rydalch and Jason Parkinson. Troy Fowkes won the awarrJ for top hand, and top horse went to Whit Hill. Kayla Neves / The Sentinel Union High School came to Salem as the Lady Skyhawks kicked off the soccer season Tuesday, Aug. H ,-2009. The team is young and inexperienced this year, but they have some great soccer talent. Of the six offensive starters, only one is a senior with four sophomores and a freshman. The Skyhawks have been working and conditioning all summer, and they were anxious to get on the field and show their stuff. The lone offensive senior, Lindsay Stevens, led the way, scoring a hat trick in the first 11 minutes of the match and added a fourth goal to her slats early in the second half. "Linds is a great player. She knows how to finish," said Coach Lee Gillie. Supporting Stevens in her offensive attack was sophomore forward Kallee Wilson and freshman center-mid Paige Robison. 'Those three played very well with each other today. Kallee provided Linds a pinpointed pass for her second goal today. Paige played like a natural — you couldn't tell this was her first start or that she is a freshman," said Gillie. The Lady Skyhawks took 44 shots on goal for the match. Lindsay Stevens had four goals, Paige Robison had two, and Kallee Wilson had two. Kallee also had two assists, and Paige and Hailey Ingram each had one. Kaylyn Sly earned the win as 2oal- keeper with 11 saves. The Skyhawks won 8-1. The JV team played just as well as the varsity squad — their offense started just a little slower. Sarah Armstrong scored a hat trick to follow Lindsay Stevens' performance in the varsity match. Kallee Wilson, Hailey Ingram and Adrienne Clark each had one goal. Maddy Eidem had two second-half assists. Ashlee Shepherd and Madison Adams split time in the net for the 6-1 win. "The JV squad played impressively well for their first match. Haley Anderson did a tremendous job controlling the midfiekl and flow of the game. Sarah Armstrong has a great knack for finishing goals when she is around the eighteen," said Gillie On Thursday, Aug. 13 Salem Hills had a rematch against Granger. When the two teams played last year, Salem Hills won in double overtime. Granger was hoping to extract revenge this time around, but the Skyhawks had other plans. Granger played a bunker defense, packing sometimes eight players in front of the goal to keep the Skyhawks out. "It took us some time, to figure out how to work around their interesting defense, but when we started using our wings and crossing that opened the door," said Coach Gillie. The first goal was scored as Paige Robison took the ball to the right end line and cross the ball to the far post, where Margo Brockbank knocked the ball in for the goal. Lindsay Stevens hooked up with Sarah Armstrong for the second goal. The Skyhawks continued to attack, but struggled to add more goals as they hit the posts and crossbar a few times each. "Our strength of this match was the remarkable play of our stopper, Brianna Wilding. She kept the ball on our offensive, end and really frustrated-the. attempted counterattacks of Granger," said Gillie. The Skyhawks got the win, 2-1. Sarah Armstrong continued her finishing ways as she tapped in four goals during the JV match. Chrissy Van Ausdal scored her first goal of the season with a nice shot over the keeper. Margo Brockbank scored from a 40-yard free kick for her second goal of the day. The most exciting goal of the day came from Paige Robison — she dribbled the ball 60 yards through defenders and her own teammates and slipped on past the goalkeeper. Final score, Skyhawks 7, Granger 1. "The ladies did a great job to overcome the 8-1 formation that Granger was playing. Ashlee Shepherd played some great defense for us, and Melissa Brimhail played extremely well in the midfield. Both teams play comfortably well with each other," said Gillie.
