Show -N E W S- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most Writer's conference Trieste Bills STAFF WRITER The Young Writer's Conference began at nine in the morning on Saturday. At a time when most kids would still be asleep, a group of dedicated young writers and teachers gathered to listen to speakers and share their work. Carol Lynch Williams, an author from Springville, explained that sometimes you cannot know the end at the beginning, or even at the climax. "You can't force a novel to be what you think it should've been when you started out," she said. Finally, she told them the importance of revision. "Don't meander. Use just enough words to make a novel," Williams said. Mette Ivie Harrison explained that books seem long when they are mainly description without much dialogue or action. "Look for a dialogue between the characters that's sparky. If your characters don't give each other what they want, it adds to the story. You've got to have conflict," she said. The last speaker was Amy Jameson, a literary agent, who explained how important it is to be able to take rejection. "Even with a good book, most people will experience a lot of rejection," she said. "You've gotta have a lot of self-confidence to do this. . .There are a lot of people writing books out there!" The con ference w as organized by the Nebo Reading Council and Carol Lynch Williams. It ended with book signings by the authors. All the proceeds of the conference go towards the Reading Council's service project "Blankets and Books for Babes", a donation of a' fleece blanket and a book for every new mother who leaves the hospital. "You have to learn about other things in life to draw about it or write about it," she said. Drill Team WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2007 • A5 'Live wElle' 5K and Fun Run scheduled The first annual "Live wElle" 5-K and Kids Fun Run will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2007, at 7:30 a.m. at the Hunter Valley Park, located in Springville. All proceeds from the run will benefit the "Live wElle" Scholarship established in memory of Elle Hullinger, daughter of Scott and Kirsten Hullinger of Springville. Elle was born on her parents' wedding anniversary, June 5, 2005, and she was the absolute perfect anniversary gift. For the next 15 months, her two brothers and two sisters, as well as her parents, enjoyed and loved her to the utmost. She died in a tragic accident on August 30, 2006. As with the rest of her short life, Elle was surrounded and loved by her family in her last moments on earth. Within moments of Elle's death, two rainbows appeared above her home. To Elle's family, these rainbows signified hope for a better day. The "Live wElle" Scholarship will provide a measure of this same hope to a local high school senior seeking further education. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has shown toughness, resiliency, determination, and love and caring for others. The Hullinger family Elle Hullinger invites anyone who would like to help with this cause to register and participate in the "Live wElle" 5K. Registration forms can be found at www. live-wElle.com, as well as MVP Sports in Spanish Fork and Blayn's Cycling in Springville. Other donations and sponsorships are also welcome and can be sent to the Nebo Education Foundation, "Live wElle" Scholarship, 350 South* Main Street, Spanish Fork, UT 84660. All proceeds of the run and other donations will benefit the scholarship fund. The Hullinger family appreciates the love and support that so many in the community — family, friends and strangers alike — have extended. Please help make this event a success. The program recognizes and rewards AQHA Members for time spent with their American Quarter Horses in activities such as trail rides, shows, working cattle, pleasure driving and simply riding. A unique aspect of the program is its simplicity. .Current AQHA Members complete a program application and pay a onetime $25 enrollment fee. Each enrollee receives an official AQHA log sheet to record their hours driving or riding an American Quarter Horse. Participants need not own their own horse, but all official hours must be accrued with a registered American Quarter Horse. Nine subsequent awards are presented at 100-5,000 hour levels and range from merchandise gift certificates from Drysdales Western Store to a Montana Silversmith's trophy belt buckle at the highest level. Stephanie A. McCommon, AQHA Manager of Membership Services, said "The Horseback Riding Program is a unique opportunity to earn rewards outside of traditional competition. In some cases the program rewards people who already spend many hours riding American Quarter Horses. For others, the Horseback Riding Program is an incentive to get out and ride." Horseback riding provides good exercise. According to the U.S. Department than 27 million people participate in horseback riding nationally. AQHA actively encourages horseback riding as a relaxing recreational activity that can be enjoyed alone or shared with family and friends.
