In a matter of a few clicks on the screen, a reader can find all sorts of information they might want to know about almost anything. Books, magazines, and information about television, movies, music, sports, news and much more are readily available while surfing the net. Here are a few of my regular sites and why I spend so much time reading them. 1. www.Amazon.com: I hit this book-lovers delight almost every day, just to browse for new releases or to answer questions from my students. It's a great place to find out about new books, discover which books make up a favorite series, and give kids the exact release dates of an upcoming sequel. The short plot descriptions also come in handy when trying to help someonefindjust the right book. 2. www.imdb.com: This internet movie database is another great site for knowing what's happening, especially if you have kids who are really into upcoming movies. You can find plot summaries, actor biographies, and lists of cast and crew from all your favorite films. Of course, you can also keep tabs of some of the following release dates if you're interested: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Toy Story 3, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Inkheart. 3. http://en.wikipedia. org: This constantly updated encyclopedia is a modern marvel. Steve Irwin, "The Crocodile Hunter," has only been gone a little over a week, and yet details of the accident and funeral services are already included in his online "wiki." 4. www.Dictionary.com: English teacher or not, I still run across words that I'm not sure how to spell (words my spell-checker can't always recognize either) or a word that I need to verify the meaning ' as I use it in my writing. The beauty of this website .is that it.allows you to refer to several dictionaries all at the same time by using the scroll command. 5. www.google.com: Looking for information, a picture, or map? Google seems to have it all, although sometimes you have to skim read a lot of junk to find you know just the right keyword. 6. www.ask.com: This one is a writer's best friend. If I need to know when pop top cans were first used on soda cans, asking the question gives me the answer in a matter of seconds. (The idea came about in the 1930s but the first test can was produced in 1955 and exported to American troops stationed overseas according to the hit page www.collectiblesodacans. com.) 7. http://pioneer-library. org: This little known site provides a wealth of resources, including access to local newspapers, national magazine articles, and homework helpers to name a few. If you haven't been any of these places yet, go check them out. You'll be surprised at all the great things you can read while surfing on the internet. Cesa r 's Way: Th e Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding &. Correcting Common Dog Problems by Cesar Millan (Harmony Books, 2006) If you own a dog and you haven't yet discovered the "Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel, then you are missing out on the solution to every problem you and you dog might be experiencing with the dog's behavior. The gentle, firm, and successful methods that Millan uses work with nearly every dog. (He himself says he's only had two dogs who were not able to overcome their past problems due to violent training, resulting in isolation for the rest of their lives.) Although this book is more about the psychology rather than the actual training methods, it will still teach you enough to know how to better understand your dog and allow the two of you to have a more successful relationship, without the need for incessant barking, bolting away, and tearing up things in your home and yard. This book is an absolute must read for dog lovers everywhere.
