State finals will be held mid-March, 2007. Educational materials and teachers1 guides for running school-wide Poetry Out Loud competitions will be distributed by the Utah Arts Council. "It's exciting to see students get fired up about poetry," said Margaret Hunt, director of the Utah Arts Council. "Last year's competition had so much energy. This year we are thrilled to open the competition to all Utah high schools." The Utah finalist for Poetry Out Loud will receive $200 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and an all-expense-paid trip (with an adult chaperone) to compete in the national finals in Washington, D.C., in late April, 2007. The finalist's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry booksrTwo runners-up will receive $100 and $200, respectively, for his or her school library. The National Poetry Out Loud Competition will award a total of $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends, with a $20,000 college scholarship for the Poetry Out Loud national champion. Presented in partnership with NEA and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is part of a national program that encourages high school students to leam about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. The program offers dynamic competition opportunities and educational materials to high schools throughout the country, including a standards-based teacher's guide, a comprehensive website, and a CD featuring poetry recitations by well-known actors and writers. More than 200,000 students across the country are expected to take part in Poetry Out Loud this year. The Utah Arts Council is a division of the Utah Department of Community and Culture. Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is seeking nominations for its Monument Advisory Committee. The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Advisory Committee (GSENM-MAC) provides advice and recommendations on science issues and the achievement of Management Plan objectives. Seven of the 17 member seats are vacant. The seven seats to be filled "are: • A member with expertise in archaeology; • A member with expertise in paleontology; • A member with expertise in systems ecology; • A livestock grazing permittee operating within the Monument to represent grazing permittees; • An outfitter and guide operating within the Monument to represent commercial recreational users; ... • A representative of the motorized recreational community; and • A representative of the non-motorized recreational community. Each GSENM-MAC member will be a person who, as a result of training and experience, has knowledge or special expertise which qualifies him or her to provide advice from among the categories of interest listed above. All members of the GSNEM-MAC are appointed for terms of three years. The new appointments to these five positions will begin no earlier than March 1, 2007 and will end February 28,2010. Members will serve without monetary compensation, but will be reimbursed for travel and per diem expenses at current rates for Government employees. The Committee will meet at least twice a year. Any individual or organization may nominate one or more persons to serve on the GSENM-MAC. Individuals may nominate themselves for GSENM-MAC membership. To make a nomination, submit a letter of nomination, a completed nomination form, letters of reference from the represented interests or organizations, and any other information that speaks to the nominee's qualifications. The specific category the nominee would be representing should be identified in the nomination letter and in the nomination form. The Utah BLM State Director and Monument Manager will review the nomination forms and letters of reference. The State Director will confer with the Governor of the State of Utah on potential nominations. The BLM State Director will then forward recommended nominations to the Secretary of the Interior who has responsibility for making the appointments. GSENM will accept public nominations until November 20, 2006.
