Show Page 3 DOLLARS AND SENSE On Oct. 5, 2006 the Utah Wildlife Board approved the Division of Wildlife Resource's latest hunting licence fee proposals. If approved by our Utah legislators, 2007 will look like this. If you wish to hunt big game, you will be required to purchase a $26 small game licence and pay a $10 application fee before you can enter the lottery. The least amount of money you can spend to be unsuccessful will be $36. If you want a bonus point, it will cost you another $20. (If you are serious about hunting, it makes no sense not to buy a bonus point.) So, your real cost to be unsuccessful will be $56. If, by some stretch of the imagination, you are successful in drawing a deer tag in 2007, you will pay another $35 big game fee. You cannot hunt deer in 2007 for less than $91. However, you cannot draw out every year; the most optimistic scenario is that you could hunt every other year. You will pay $56 to be unsuccessful one year and $91 to hunt the next year for a total cost of $147. This is the best you can expect and it probably won't be that good. If you intend to hunt on a limited entry unit the cost will be greater still. In 2006, it cost me $5 to be unsuccessful in the draw lottery and I received a bonus point. In 2007, the same service will cost me $56. If I had been successful in the draw this year, I would have paid $45 to hunt deer. In 2007 it will cost me $91 for what $45 could have bought me this year. That's a pretty good licence fee hike I would say; especially since, earlier this year, the DWR told us hunting fees would not change in 2007 because they had been given a generous legislative appropriation. If DWR policies stress you as much as they stress me, take time to write your legislators and tell them to vote no to these fee schemes. Ask them to change the way -the DWR is funded. Tell them you want the DWR to be given a charge to manage and protect, and a single legislative appropriation to get that minimal job done. Tell your legislators that you want all licence fees and/or other funds raised by the DWR to go directly to the general fund. Tell them that hunters and wildlife will be better served if they "gather up the reins."
