FOREST SERVICE AND PARTNERS PROPOSE McGATH DAM REPLACEMENT The Dixie National Forest's Escalante Ranger District and its partners are proposing to replace McGath Dam, located on the south side of Boulder Mountain about 15 miles north of here. The dam maintains McGath Lake, a popular brook trout fishery and important water source for area agriculture. Dixie National Forest inspections of the dam over the past several years raised concerns about the dam's integrity. Forest Engineer Joe Black's 2005 inspection indicated the dam was deteriorating rapidly, threatening both public safety and natural resources in and downstream of the lake. Utah State Dam Safety Engineer Dave Marble conducted his own inspection of McGath Dam in May 2006 and confirmed Black's assessment. Representatives of the Forest Service, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the principal waterrightholder met Monday to identify and consider a range of possible corrective actions that would alleviate safety and resource concerns while minimizing impacts on the lake and adjoining areas. BY PAT DIX BOBCATS OPEN WITH SIX PRESEASON WINS The Panguitch Bobcats Baseball Team opened the defense of their State 1A Title this week with six pre-season victories. On the 8th they played Green River in The Westridge Tournament and behind the no-hit pitching of Cameron Leach racked up a 5 to 1 victory. Leach also led all hitters with a home run and 4 runs batted in. Tyler Pollock followed with a 2 for 2 day and 2 runs scored. In game two of the Tourney Southpaw Brady Barney fired a two hit shut out, including 8 strikeouts, to drop host Westridge 9 to 0. Including last year's State championship game, the Cats have outscored Westridge 22 to 0. Second Baseman Trevor Peterson had a 2 for 3 day as the Cats coasted to an easy win. In addition to the team trophy Cameron Leach was named the Offensive MVP of the Tourney and T\Ier Pollock was named the Defensive MVP On the 9th, Panguitch traveled to Dugway to beard the Lion's in their den. What it turned out to be was a run scoring marathon as Coach Clint Barney played everyone on the squad and the Bobcats waltzed to a 26 to 11 win. BOBCATS CAPTURE GRAND SLAM CROWN In the Panguitch Grand Slam Tournament, August 11 and 12, the Bobcats continued there winning ways with three straight wins and the crown. Game one with Tabiona, Cameron Leach continued his torrid hitting streak with 2 doubles and a single and 4 runs scored. Josh Bateman drove in 4 runs with a pair of triples and a double, while Clinton Miner chipped in with a run producing single, as the Cats coasted past the Tabbys 13 to 1. On the mound the Bobcats were unhittable as Leach fanned five in 2 innings of work and Brady Barney came on to close it out whiffing 6. Saturday the Bobcats downed Intermountain Christian 9 to 3 as Brady Barney and Tyler pollock combined to throw the 5 hit victory. Cameron Leach continued his hot streak at the plate with 3 singles and 2 runs scored. The big blow of the came off the bat of first baseman Kazen Pollock who rocketed a line drive 2 run shot over the deepest part of the outfield fence. Against a tough Green River nine in the Championship game, Cameron Leach battled his way through 4 innings, holding the Pirates at bay with 4 runs (2 unearned) while fanning 4. Brady Barney came on in the last inning and with 2 outs gave up a base on balls. With a 3 and 2 count on the following hitter, Barney picked off the runner at first base to preserve the victory and the championship. Kazen Pollock slammed a huge two run double to bolster the Bobcat's attack and Cameron Leach kept his hit streak alive with a pair of singles and 2 runs scored. In the six games played this week, Leach has hit safely 12 times and reached base safely 21 times. The group developed a proposal to first construct a new dam to maintain the lake, and then remove portions of the old dam. The Escalante Ranger District expects to begin formal development and analysis of the proposed action, including extensive public involvement, in October. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will pursue funding for the project from.various sources. Implementation is targeted for the summer of2007. Meanwhile, Dixie National Forest engineers have increased the frequency of inspections at McGath Dam. Black said that the forest will take emergency actions if the structure deteriorates to the point that public safety and natural resources are in imminent danger. Such actions could include a controlled breach of the dam to reduce pressure and prevent a catastrophic failure.
