Page 2 THE GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS AT BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK One of the most popular recreational pursuits in Bryce Canyon National Park is hiking the trails down and around the main Bryce Canyon Amphitheater. The Queen's Garden Trail, Mossy Caye Trail, and the Rim Trail between Sunrise Point and Sunset Point are slated for trail upgrades and repairs this spring, summer, and fall. Why does the National Park Service works on the trails in the summer, during periods of heaviest visitation? The answer is that the weather conditions and snow depth prevent work on the trails during the winter months. The ground is saturated with water and the limestone mud cannot be worked unless it is dry. Unfortunately, due to the short trail construction season these three trails will be worked on simultaneously as well as routine trail maintenance on other trails throughout the park. Routine trail work includes clearing debris from the trail, rebuilding rock walls, regarding surfaces, and placement of water bars to divert water off of the trail. Currently, the trail crew is completing routine maintenance on the Mossy Cave Trail. Over the past few years, parts of the trail narrowed to 12 or 14 inches due to erosion. This Vz mile trail is very popular for families with small children. To further protect natural resources and maintain safe access to along this trail a longer term plan with an environmental assessment is being developed. The public will be invited to comment on the plan in early summer. The Vz mile of Rim Trail between Sunrise and Sunset Viewpoints is another project underway. This historic trail was built in 1917 by the US Forest Service prior to the park designation as an easy hike to view the main amphitheater. The plan is' to grade and repave the trail to make it accessible for people with walking difficulties and wheelchairs or strollers. A lower Sunrise Point viewing platform will be improved as part of this project. ceived a majority of the under the rim use in the past few years, especially when the Navajo Loop Trail has been closed due to mudslides. Routine maintenance is being performed on this trail in order to stabilize it and return it to good condition. Bryce Canyon is famous because of the process of erosion. The Hoodoos, the pointy geologic features that attract 1.5 million visitors to Bryce Canyon every year were created as a result of weather conditions such as rain and snow. Because of this process, the trails at Bryce Canyon National Park are constantly changing. In parks with granite or other rocky soils, trail crews can rehabilitate a trail and it may last 10-20 years. At Bryce Canyon, one or two heavy storms may destroy the trail just a few weeks after it has been completed. The park will have a number of trail crews to work on these projects this summer. The trails will remain open during construction with intermittent short periods of closures (15- 20 minutes) to maintain safety of the park visitors and trail crew workers, Park interpreters will provide short talks for visitors on the trails while they wait. This is similar to having a pilot car operation in a road construction zone. The only trail in the park currently closed due to mudslides and rockfall is the Bryce Connector Trail. Hikers can expect areas of some snow and ice along sections of the trails south of Swamp Canyon. Opening the entire Navajo Loop trail is one of the park's top priorities to provide visitors access to see and experience this famous feature of the park. While waiting for the ground to dry out, so that it is safe for the trail crew to work on the Two Bridges side of the Navajo Loop, the trail crew is working on other trail projects. Visitors are able to hike the Wallstreet side of the loop and connect with the Queens Garden The Queen's Garden Trail has re- Trail. AG MARKET NEWS Receipts: 1,016. Last Week: 1,124.
