Show Page 5 THE Mti of thc/crice by Earl Roe wearlroe@yahoo.com • 676-2376 It appears that I just hit a good day to take the Lions Cans to Cedar City and was able to gas up for $2.57/gal. Two days later I had an appointment with Dr. Ellsworth and when I came home the price had gone up 11 cents. It looks to me liked Pres. Bush ought to have someone give CPR to the OPA and bring it back to life. Most of our older readers will recognize these letters, but for our younger readers they stood for the 'Office of Price Administration' whose main duty was to see that no 'price gouging' occured. The Federal OPA regulated what producers could charge for their product and the amount of mark-up the retailers could add on to the price to consumers. It worked quite well during the WWII years when there was a shortage of many consumer goods on the home front. Many were in such short supply that you had to have a 'Food Stamp Booklet' which allowed you to only buy so much of certain products like coffee and sugar. (I still have my booklet with some stamps still in it.) You still had to pay for the product; the stamp only gave you the authorization to buy it and the sales person tore out one of the stamps for each item purchased and the merchant was checked from time to time to see if his remaining inventory and the stamps he had came out even, The whole operation was a lot of trouble, but so was the war. Everyone shared the same hardships and no one went hungry, especially in small rural towns where nearly everyone grew some of their food and there was lots of trading of both stamps and produce. (My dad used to trade his coffee stamps to one of our local ranchers for a mutton.) I doubt if many of our citizens (Nationally)would bear up under such a program today given the attitude they have toward our Commander-in-Chief; the war; and Homeland Security, etc., but if gas prices keep going up, they might accept it.(I think this is going to be a most interesting Summer.) Our newest family in Panguitch is Jace Willard, his wife, Mariam, and 11 week old son, Gideon. They are in the process of moving into his fathers home just West of the Welcome Market. His father, Roque Willard purchased this home from the estate of W. Earl Marshall after all of the Marshall children and grand children MAY 11,2006 GARFIELD COUNTY INSIDER were given a chance to buy it. Roque, Geanie and their family lived in it for several years and hoped to get a job teaching in our high school, but we had ail of the English teachers we needed at the time so he moved to Sholo, Arizona where he is still teaching. Many of our readers will remember Roque as one of the directors of ourfirst"Quilt Walk Play" and the poem he wrote about the Quilt Walk. (I still have copies of this if anyone would like one.) Jace will be working in Cedar City and will have to commute, but having a home to live in more than offsets the cost of travel. We welcome Jace and his family to Panguitch and hope they soon feel that they are back home again and among friends. Evalyn is more than glad to have them back in the home again. She watches it and worries when it is unoccupied as though it was still her family home. I keep an eye on it also as it was almost a second home to me for many years. Monte was my first and closest friend after we moved to Panguitch in 1929 and it was where I did my courting when I decided!! I was going to marry his sister, Evalyn. We have a problem in our community and hope that some of our readers can help solve it. The "Rollermill Hill Gunslingers" and the "Trap Shooters" along with the help of community members spent a lot of time and money building a nice shooting range South of town for the use and enjoyment of the many gun owners in our community. It now appears that everyone does not appreciate their efforts as it is being vandalized. Some "knuckle heads"(my favorite term for this type of individual) are shooting up the signs and buildings. A $250 reward is offered to anyone who can give information that will enable our law officers to apprehend these individuals (individual) and put a stop to this sort of behavior. Members of the Panguitch Lions Club held theirfirstbi-monthly meeting for May at the Flying M Cafe, Wednesday night. A most interesting item of business was a report by Linda Rabin and Cheryl Church, Co-Chairmen of an organized effort to bring live theater back to Panguitch on a year round and seasonal basis. They presented each Lion member with an excellent plan of what they have accomplished so far and it is quite an exciting concept. The logo is "HISTORIC Playhouse 89" on a shield. Tryouts for anyone interested in performing for the public will be held soon so if you feel are 'budding thespian', get in touch with Linda or Cheryl as soon as possible. The Social Hall will be the site for fhe plays, musicals, etc. for now; how- ever, the possible restoration of the old Gem Theatre was bandied around a bit. Our club voted to give them $500 to get things rolling along with the idea that more help was available if needed. The treatment of Panguitch Lake for the removal of chubs was accomplished by members of our State fish and game department over Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday of this week. When a study was made last year by department personell, it was estimated that chubs outnumbered trout by 10 to 1. At the completion of the treatment, Phil Norton, a member of our Lions Club and an avid fisherman, was at the lake and made a count of the dead fish along a portion of the shore and his count was over 10 to 1. I understand there has been some complaining about the treatment at this time of year, but from the long term results of previous treatments, I think this was an excellent time even though it took more chemicals because of the high water. Previous treatments were made in the Fall when the water was low and the warmer water along the shoreline wasfilledwith weeds for out to 50 yards. This warm water is where chubs spawn and the weeds made it almost impossible to treat effectively. I had seen chub fry under my boat when I launched it within a couple of years after treatment so lets hold off on our complaints until we see the outcome of this treatment. It may be an experiment, but that's how good things come about. "You know your onions Lettuce suppose-This beets them all - Don V turnip your nose.
