CITY UT H41,- • - > - - -'• • i • • VOLUME 10 NUMBER 44 BAER Team Looks at Twitchell Canyon Fire RICHFIELD, UT- With the fire activity on the Twitchell Canyon Fire winding down, the next step is to look at the where, what and how to stabilize the burned area. The Fishlake National Forest Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team is doing just that. Using satellite generated imagery of the area along with on-the-ground surveys, BAER team members evaluate the burned area according to the severity of the fire and develop a plan to implement appropriate recovery treatments. The focus of the treatments will be on the areas of the fire that fall in the moderate to high soil burn severity. Planned treatments are designed to mitigate adverse effects from the fire to the land, streams, roads, trails, fish and wildlife, as well as to protect the public from potential flash floods, rolling rocks and falling trees. Planned'actions include aerial applications of weed-free straw mulch and broadcast seeding, installation of straw wattles near Manderfield Reservoir, stream channel sta1 bilization measures, a variety of road and trail repair and stabilization treatments, monitoring the spread of noxious weeds and spot treatments, replacement of mine adits bumed in the fire, and installation of gates and signs where needed to provide public safety. Within the 44,874 acre perimeter of the Twitchel! Canyon Fire, approximately 29,847 acres, or 67% of the burned area has been deter. mined to be in the moderate and high severity categories. The planned treatments will take place beginning this fall and will be ongoing over several months. For every incident of wildfire that exceeds 500 acres in size, the Forest Service assembles a group of Resource Specialist's to evaluate the impacts of the burn; these individuals are collectively known as the BurnedArea Emergency Response Team, or BAER team. BAER can be thought of as a "first aid" - immediate stabilization that often begins before a fire is fully contained. BAER does not seek to replace what is damaged by fire, but to reduce further damage due to the land being temporarily exposed in a fragile condition. For instance, the application of straw mulch over 70% of a treated area, at a depth of less than $ inches, Is may lower the estimated soil erosion and resulting sediment in the streams by nearly half. In the future, additional projects are expected to take place to further rehabilitate the area affected by the Twitchell Canyon Fire. Additional road and trail maintenance, stream restoration, and ongoing noxious and invasive weed monitoring and treatments « r e examples of these types of projects. The Twitchell Canyon BAER Report can be found on the Fishlake National Forest web page, Home Country Slim Randies By the time we saw Dud, of course, the damage had been done. It was Steve who spoke first. "I don't believe it," the tall cowboy said. We all turned then, and the full impact of the deed struck us almost simultaneously. There, orr Dud's head, was a sculpture of such blasphemous proportions as would silence all of us in attendance at the Mule Bam truck stop-'s philosophy counter and world dilemma think tank. It was beautiful, of course, but it was also tragic. "They call it feathered," said Dud, turning red. "A razor cut." We just stared at the haircut without saying anything. It curved gracefully around his ears, it waved softly in sculptured layers over the top of his head, it fell in gradually decreasing thicknesses down the-ionfl-bacK-.slppe._Qf his head toward its tapered termination at the neck. "It was Anita's idea," Dud said. "She gave me the money for it and everything." Finally, Doc spoke. "What's Kelly going to say?" That's the worst of it, all right," Dud said. "I know he's going to be hurt." Kelly hadn't really worried too much about the future of his barbershop when Fantasy Fantails set up shop. He assumed it was a haircutting place for women who didn't want to take the time to go to the beauty parlor, and for guys who came to live in our small town from the city. Kelly's has always been the stronghold of local manhood. The magazines had nothing to do with decorating a house or how your investments are working out. The magazines had everything to do with what kind of bait to use on catfish and how big an engine your pickup needed to pull a large boat. You wouldn't find a single advertisement showing a guy wearing a sweater tied around his neck. Not at Kelly's. In the past, when magazines were magazines, you could read how some guy captured Gestapo headquarters with his headhunter brides. "Well," said Doc, shrugging. That haircut of yours is £ work of art, without a doubt. But there's at least one good thing about getting a really expensive haircut, Dud. Sooner or later, it'll grow out." Brought to you by www. With deepest appreciation, Shadrach Bradshaw Justice Court Judge HUNT THE DOE'S Many hunters continue to' resist antlerless deer hunting believing that It harms deer herds and deer hunting. Some think it Is unethical or unsportsmanlike. Others are too| macho to take anything but .a buck, even if It Is a tittle buck. Let me argue those points by saying that wildlife managers will tell you that doe hunting is the best way to check herd growth and prevent the overpopulation that can harm an entire deer herd. If doe's aren't taken, they are doomed to eventual waste as a natural resource. Hunting strategies for doe hunters vary little from those . of buck hunters and If you I continue to take little bucks, [ you will never get a chance at a trophy buck. Don't be ashamed or ! embarrassed or let peer pressure keep you from hunting doc's. It is important to the - overall success of all deer | hunting.
