In conjunction with the Environmental , Protection Agency's (EPA) National Radon Action Month and to promote radon awareness in Utah, Governor Huntsman has declared January "Radon Action Month." "Exposure to indoor radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer in the United States," warned DEQ Radon Manager John Hultquist. "Since elevated levels of radon gas can occur in three out of every ten homes in Utah, I strongly encourage all Utah residents to test for radon. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon.". 911 Hangup Abandoned Vehicle Abdominal Pain Alarm Alcohol Offense Animal Problem Attempted Burglary Burglary Citizen Assist Domestic Violence DUI Alcohol or Drugs Fall Family Fight Fire Fish & Game Juvenile Problem Keep the Peace Medical Emergency Traffic Accident w/Damage Sex Offense Attempted Suicide Suspicious Person/ Circumstance Theft Traffic Violation Patient Transfer Trespassing Vandalism Welfare Check On Monday, January 5th , 2009 there were 368 inmates housed in Beaver County Jail. Site SINGLE COPY 50 CENTS BEAVER, UTAH THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 2009 VOLUME 09 NUMBER 02 Home Country Slim Randies Steve, the long-limbed cowboy of our band of coffeed philsophers, rumbled into the Mule Barn coffee shop and stopped before taking his seat at the round table. He reached down, unwrapped the napkin from the fighting tools and handed his spoon to Doc. "Here, Doc, hit me." Steve held out his hand and closed his eyes. Doc tapped the back of Steve's hand, and Steve sat and flipped his coffee cup to the upright and tillable position. We waited. "You fellas know I've been looking for a little place off somewhere to build a cabin, right?" We did. "I bought one." "That's great!" "Then I called the county and they told me I had to leave a 10-foot setback on each side of the lot. Can't build on the setback, you see." "So what's the problem?" asked Doc. "The lot's only 25-feet wide by 100 feet deep.. This means I jean only build a cabin that's five feet wide." ~- T -- - •-•••_,•:.. "Well, yeah," said Dud, "but it can be ... what ... eighty feet long? Right?" 'You can build an indoor archery range 20 yards long and still have twenty feet left over to live in," Herb suggested. "Problem is," said Steve, "the county says the cabin has to be a minimum of 16 feet wide..." "Meaning?" "Well, sir," said Steve, "since I can't build on it or live on it or anything, I thought I'd just put a sign there with a collection can that says, 'Idiot's Lament. Please leave a dollar in the can.' If enough people come to look at it, I might get my money back someday..." Brought to you by 3Rivers Archery, the traditional folks. Visit them &t 3RiversArchery. com. BLM Seeks Nominations For Vacant Position On Utah's Resource Advisory Council Utah residents interested in the management and conservation of public lands have an opportunity tp become directly involved through participation on the Utah Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Resource Advisory Council (RAC). Council members provide advice and recommendations to BLM concerning the use and management on 22 million acres of public land in Utah. Nominations are currently being accepted for the position of elected official on the RAC. The incumbent will fill the seat until September 19, 2010, the remainder of this position's term. The deadline for sending nominations and letters of support to the BLM is February 5, 2009. , The Utah RAC consists of S.R. 14 Landslide The slide occurred on S.R. 14 near mile post 8, east of Cedar city. It appears that two peaks have come down and covered the road for about 1000 feet for the full width of the roadway. . There are very large boulders, rocks, dirt and trees covering the roadway. The area above seems somewhat stable currently, but officials have not been up above the roadway to assess its current condition. Two dozers have been dispatched to start the cleanup, though a safety plan is still being drafted to pursue the clean up operation. There will be some of the boulders that may require blasting if they can't be removed. The area under the slide is owned by UDOT and is all part of the a buttress that was constructed previously. Crews will be able to remove all debris from the road and keep it on the buttress so there is no impact to the stream below. About 7 to 14 days are anticipated to clear the road and rr^ke repairs,tp the pavement. For alternative routes-visrt www.CommuterLink.utah.gov. 15 members.
