And by everything we mean the President's Office. 8 Were buying more monoliths KC&* ? If iv'.v'* Almost every summer is accompanied with the special treat of being able to see one of the most popular modern "jam bands" in concert. With concert sales just barely under those of the world's top concert grosser Elton John, Dave Matthews Band is known for always putting on an amazing show. For those who don't know, Dave Matthews Band is always a highly recommended show to attend based alone on the fact that they are five of the tightest band members to play together. Every night their four-minute studio songs transform into ten to fifteen minutes jams that fuse together to form a solid talent-filled show. No other band can create such improvised fluid music. When the band first gained notoriety back in 1994, they quickly rose to the popularity heights as such other "jam bands" as The Grateful Dead and Phish. August 30th should be a date blacked-out on your calendar. Dave Matthews Band will be playing with Robert Randolph and the Family Band at Utah's best outdoor venue, the USANA Amphitheater in West Valley. Though their shows usually sell out quickly, for this show there are both reserved and lawn seats still available. Visit dmband.com for more information of upcoming shows. To purchase tickets go to tickets.com or visit your local Smith's Grocery Store. Reserved seats are selling for $59.50 and lawn for $38. Don't miss this opportunity to hear great music and have a good time. On October 19, 2005 life changed drastically for UVSC graduate Noelle Pikus-Pace. You may remember the news that day when she was badly injured by an accident involving a runaway bobsled in Calgary, Canada. As the prefavored skeleton Olympic athlete, people all over the world were waiting to hear the final status of her injuries. With only 114 days until opening ceremonies, all seemed hopeless when it turned out that Pikus-Pace had double compound fractures on her right leg. When young filmmaker Matthew Fults heard the news, he knew immediately that the road ahead would be full of moments well worth documenting. Fults grabbed his equipment and decided to record it all. The result-a documentary style biography showing PikusPace's hard work to get to the Olympics. While the documentary feels like a bad episode of Dateline that's lacking editing, the message and story that it tells is hope inspiring. You'll feel pride for the tough, yet amazingly quick recovery Pikus-Pace pushed herself through. It goes to show how far a positive attitude and a lot of work can push you. Courtesy photo/supermanreturns.warnerbors.com Superman Returns Luke Hickman Life Writer Nearly 20 years since the last Superman film, Warner Bros, has decided to continue the franchise by going with writer/director/producer Bryan Singer The Usual Suspects. X-Men 1&2 and his script. Instead of recreating the origins of Superman, much like Batman Begins did. Singer decided to take a different approach. In his opinion, the only good Superman movies to date were the first two. What he's done with i uperman Returns is erased the third and fourth installments by taking us on another route. After human scientists discover the remains of his home planet Krypton, Superman (played by the nearly unknown Brandon Routh) heads into space in an attempt to learn more about his people. The movie begins at the end of his five-year absence. Upon his return. Superman learns that much has changed. Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) now has a child and is engaged to their boss' son. Let down by his disappearance, people across the world are bitter towards Superman. Lex Luther (Kevin Spacey), after weaseling his way out of two consecutive life sentences, is out and about causing mischief. Superman Returns is one of this summer's best movies for all audiences. It is absolutely clean, the fighting sequences are all blood-free and there is no swearing. The story is good, the visual effects are great and it even puts a somewhat emotional twist on this action-driven story. Even though the previews for Superman Returns have made it out to be cheesy and lame, know that in this case looks are deceiving. Singer's finished product will revive this franchise just as Christopher Nolan's did with Batman Begins. Even though the actors have changed, Superman Returns has the exact same feel as the originals. It fits smoothly in harmony with the others. If you're expectations are high, get ready to have them met, if not passed. If you've seen the previews that made you jump to the conclusion that Superman Returns isn't too promising, ditch your senses and go see it. It'll be the most fun you've had watching a comic book mov- ie since Spiderman. |
