With the support of the Utah System of Higher Education, as well the community, UVSC plans on making regular progress toward achieving the goal of university status. But before UVSC can be considered for university status, a list of 8 "issues" must be addressed, as stated in a September letter to UVSC President William Sederburg, from Richard Kendell, the Utah Commissioner of Higher Education. The Utah System of Higher Education has assembled a team of outside consultants to be involved in UVSC's progress and "who understand the rple of universities." / These outside consultants, with their "collaborative efforts and judgments," will help UVSC officials outline how such institutions should be structured. It is also mentioned that this consortium should involve faculty and staff, the Trustees, the Board of Regents and community leaders. According to a poll con- ducted for the Deseret Moming News and KSLTV, of 203 Utah county residents, 81 percent support UVSC's decision in becoming a university, "We're very pleased [with the results of the poll]," President Sederburg was quoted saying in the Deseret Moming News. "That shows strong support for that initiative." Among the items for improvement is the need for a better library. Plans are already underway for the construction of this facility, the Digital Learning Center, which will begin this summer. Other changes currently underway are the lowering of faculty workloads. The school must also hire more fulltime faculty, whereas UVSC has • one of the highest numbers of adjunct faulty to fulltime faculty ratios in the state. The school must also add more degree programs, outline the intended graduate degrees and retain current UVSC students. The commissioner's letter states that the major volume of students is in the lower division classes, indicating not enough students in the upper division classes, stopping UVSC from becoming a university. Trust account established for Pugmire familly Ashley Robertson News Writer In memory of Blaine Pugmire, a former UVSC Certified Flight Instructor whose plane crashed into Utah Lake on June 9t, killing him and three other men, a trust account has been established at Central Bank by neighbors and friends for the Pugmire family. The purpose of this monetary account is to help the widow and family left behind during their particular times of financial constraint. "We're hoping to raise enough money to help with the future expenses for the family," explained Mark Middlebrook, neighbor of Pugmire partly responsible for establishing the fund. "We'd like to at least help alleviate some of the financial stresses that they're going to encounter in that respect." Donations for the Blaine Pugmire trust account are being accepted at any Central Bank branch. This trust fund, which is a cash fund, is set up so the funds are available when needed by the Pugmire family. Pugmire is survived by his pregnant wife Nicole, and three children. Pugmire was an experienced pilot with more than 2,000 hours of flight time before he died; he had been piloting the single-engine airplane back from a one-day business trip in St. George, Utah with two other men but never made it to the Provo Airport landing strip. Pieces of the airplane were recovered from Utah Lake, and all three men who had been on board were found dead. until the flow of illegal immigrants is stopped. "They should remember their oath," Keyes said, adding that if they don't act accordingly, "we should let them go." He noted that ignorance regarding illegal immigration is not unique to the Bush administration, but that it has been going on for the past thirty years. "It's about time we asked them [politicians] what they've been doing all this time," Keyes said. The proposed border fence would also need to be completed, and immigration laws already in place must be enforced." Her solution also calls for the punishment of illegals already living in the United States, and for the discipline of American companies employing illegal workers. Mercer believes this is all achievable, with government and citizen cooperation. "Can we secure the border? We certainly can," she said.
