These forums are designed to provide an open panel where plans of the institution can be publicized, thereby allowing future feedback from community members. The first Board of Trustees Forum will be held July 19 on UVSC's Wasatch Campus; the second will be held in the Orem City Council Chambers on July 21. Both of the forums will go from 7-9 p.m., and are open to the public. Through the forums, the Board of Trustees plans to present six tactical directions concerning the school's planning and budgeting process for the upcoming fiscal year, and assess how well the directions of the previous year were met. UNIVERSITY to UVSC; very similar forums were hosted last year, with five of the presented strategic directions being identical to those being presented this year. However, this year's forums seem to be sparking a particular interest with some members of the community as public debate continues regarding the direction of the school. Although the forums are designed to demonstrate broadly.the school's strategic directions, some community members have taken a special, recent concern in trying to ensure that the campus direction is suitable for the community. Furthermore, this year, in addition to the five strategic directions presented last year, the community has added a sixth, twelve-point direction. The meetings are designed to present the decisions that UVSC is facing, and are open to public feedback. The plan is to publicize the aspirations of the school through the forums, and then distribute the report to every entity on campus for fall semester, 2005. The report will include how well the institution met the goals for the previous fiscal year, and forecast the goals and strategies of the future. of HASS, the advisors will be over two or three departments," Tibbitts said, This being the case, Tibbitts said it is best for students who are already in a major to talk with their faculty advisors if they have them. The young star is part of a binary star system, where two stars orbit one another. "We've known about the primary star for a while. But the technology hasn't been available to see the other one." Resting atop the Andes mountains, the Las Campanas observatory now provides the means to view the star. Until recently, the mid-infrared technology existed only in the Northern hemisphere, leaving the star hidden from observatories' views. But even with the new telescopes he must wait for the star to be visible. Finding a star in its infancy is such a rare and exciting opportunity, Haisch said, "because a cloud of gasses form into a star in no time at all." Stars form when a cloud of dust and gasses begin to gravitationally collapse. While collapsing under its own weight, the star begins to spin and heat up to the point where nuclear fusion occurs. The star in question is what is called a proto star. It has not yet heated enough to undergo fusion, and the light it is producing is caused from the gravitational collapse of the cloud. If indeed this is a young star, then it will be one of only a handful we know about. As for its specific age and whether or not it is in fact a star, Haisch said, "Until I get more data, I can't really say what it is. But if it is a star, it could be as young as mere tens of thousands of years." Considering that our sun is over four billion years old at mid life, a star of this age would be one of only a few in existence, due to the brief period of time in which they form. At one point gaining brief international recognition for another discovery, Haisch hopes this discovery will remain more localized amongst his peers. "I want the discovery to stay local until I know what it is for sure." The reward for discovering such stars is personal satisfaction for him as a life long star gazer. "Just seeing these things is enough for me."
