He gave as an example the resolution which is coming about between the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. He also explained how the leaders of European nations, as well as our liberal media, were the most blown away when they saw the desire of the Iraqis to go out and vote. The senator made note that when it rains here in our country we seem to be reluctant to go out and vote. Senator Hatch urged students to get involved with local political groups. "Get out and vote!" he said. He invited the audience not to be ashamed of their political opinions. Immigration was another subject brought to attention. The senator mentioned some of President Bush's ideas on the issue, explaining that if immigrants of other nations want to come and work, he feels that it is fine. He said that all they are asked to do is register to work, live a decent life while working, and if they continue to do so they therefore can be placed in line to receive citizenship. "Our country would have a difficult time running if it wasn't for undocumented workers doing jobs that no American wants to do," he said. Shirley Praxton, a local citizen of Provo, felt that Hatch's comments were worthwile. "He was here to listen to what the students were concerned about; it was great," she said. UVSC President Sederburg said, "I think it's great to have a person with a stature such as senator Hatch to include us in his state visits...we're very honored to have him; he's been a great supporter." Senator Hatch has also spoken with other local leaders about having a political science degree available at the college; however, that is yet to be determined. Hatch expressed that he is very proud of the faculty and the college as a whole for its accomplishments. He feels that UVSC has great leaders who are taking students in the right direction. |
