Gone Phishin' Phishing -An attempt to collect credit card, or other, information, by the use of bogus emails or websites. The email says "You're account needs to be updated." Or, "Possible fraudulent charges have been made to your account." The email has links that direct you to a website that looks legit, but in actuality is asking for personal information so they can later charge your credit card account or use your personal information to apply for new lines of credit. How do you protect yourself from phisherman? Remember that any reputable company never asks you to give your personal information in an insecure manner. Here are some quick tips to keep you safe: •Don't send personal information through email •Always type the link into your address bar "www.ebay. com"(don't click on the link, it may hijack your browser, even if you cut and paste the link to your address it may take you to the predators website) •Verify the address with documents you have received from the financial institution. • When in doubt call the financial institution. Ask them if there are any problems with you account. Be a skeptic. In a case that involves your money and hard work, don't be gullible. Statistics suggest that about 5% percent of those that receive phishing emails respond with the requested information or they click the link in the email and fill out the online form. Either way the criminal has their information and is now free to ruin the credit of those who fall into their trap. If you have been a victim, or receive a suspect email, report it to the actual financial institution; most banks and online companies now devote part of their security team to stamping out phishers and also try to help educate the general public. If you have questions about a suspect email or for any other question you might have about any problem call me: 863-8665. The College Times Ethics bowl team hoping for national title Kyomi Bollick Your Campus Writer The UVSC Ethics Bowl Team is one of the most academically competitive groups on campus. Supported by the Philosophy Department and the Ethics Center, a small group of students work year around for one day of glory. For this year's team, that day is closely approaching. Professor /Advisor Dr. Karen Mizell and team members Alden Stout, Britt Blomquist and Teyonda Hall will travel to Texas at the end of February to compete in the national, quickly becoming international, event. As a team the three students have prepared 15 cases that they will present to a panel of judges and then respond to critiques and questions on various ethical decisions. Alden Stout, team president, is planning on taking the UVSC to the top this year. After narrowly missing the cutoff at nationals 2004, the team has been infected with the disease to succeed. They made a very impressive showing at regionals this past November and have been preparing tirelessly of the national event since. The class is set up primarily to support the team. In a competition like this, background research is essential. Non-competitive students enrolled in the course become mini walking encyclopedias on the cases. Their job is to research every possible aspect of a case that could come up and drill the team until they get it right. If you think it sounds like hard work, your right, but there are rnany enjoyable aspects the class. Because nationals are the end of February, the class stops meeting about halfway through the semester. Many students find it refreshing to work a heavy load for a few weeks and then have more time for the rest of classes come finals. Additionally the course, PHIL 475R only offered spring semester, is repeatable so students who truly enjoy discussing ethical dilemmas can take the class up to three times still receiving credit. Ethics Bowl the club has been solely responsible for running the high school ethics bowl the last several years. They take the same set up as the national competition and encourage high school students from all over the area to join. Many high school students after attending the competition find the idea of enrollment at UVSC very attractive. The club is always busy, as soon as the high school competition is over regional competition begins, then it's fundraising and other activities. The clubs latest effort has been to get information about Utah Animal abuse laws to the students. For more information on the club or team, visit Dr. Karen Mizell in LA 121.
