Show N reminiscences OF TINTIC 0 11 ritten by C 11 II blanchard of salt laire lake for A J orem co go boston stock brokers THE MAMMOTH MINE the mammoth mine was located in jannary 1870 over forty seven years ago it has since been worked continuously except for short inter vals when shut down tor for repairs of shaft or hoist and when the big gold strike was made etwas shut down in the latter instance to arrange some plan to prevent the miners from high grading or carrying away the rich gold rock which was so 60 plentiful work was wa finally re fumed without taking ands m means e ens to safe guard this rich ore anait lt was soon found that every miner mine 1 at work in X the mine was helping himself himself the impression became general that the company did not object and since others were helping themselves with out protest each man concluded he might As as well get his lils share it was estimated that oyer worth of gold rock was stolen before the authorities amok to the state of at af fairs some were arrested convicted and sentenced enten ced to the penitentiary for terms others escaped upon pay ment of the estimated value of stolen ore I 1 knew of several cases where miners remained at work for years and paid back in labor tor for ore taken in these latter cases the men had re calved nothing for what they had stolen as they had shipped through others who refused to pay them tor for their contribution to the shipments the mcintyre brothers samuel and william who control the mam main moth mine got their start through the death of an uncle in texas he left them some longhorn cattle these they drove to tintic gintic valley then fine cpr grazing in the early 70 s during a drouth in california of several years dura afon the sheep men of that state drove many thousands into utah and sofai sa them for what they could get the mcintyre brot brothers herd bought some 10 of these sheep at an average of 76 75 cen head the next year they traced traded these for an interest in the mammoth mine this was their start in mining later they bought other interests and secured control which they have held ever since shortly after they traded tor for the first interest william mcintyre remarked that he would rather have an old texas steer than the whole mam main moth mine he has long since chang ed his mind ten or twelve years ago I 1 was told that bill mcintyre had more ready cash in the bank than any other man in salt lake city the mammoth mine was first worked tor for copper the ores carri carr ed from 40 to 48 per cent in this metal besides good gold and silver values they hauled the ore some 25 miles to santaquin San thence ship ped it to pope cole baltimore md or swansea wales at big profits it was their custom to strip down the vein matter alongside the cop per this vein matter was left in the various drifts and slopes as waste one day a miner took a piece of this waste to samuel acin tyre tyro and told him it was rich tich in gold continued on page 8 reminiscences of by C H blanchard continued from page 1 and ana silver ilver he ile was told that they were mining for copper and did not care finally persuaded the assayer to as B say a piece which he had produced the values proved that they had been rejecting very high grade ore 4 this waste 9 was then taken out and shipped to the salt lake valley j smelters later a mill was erected or its reduction at mcintyre s ranch 6 miles distance from the mine some IS 15 furnaces were installed where he ore was smelted and the matte shipped to pope cole baltimore later this plant was abandoned and E a big mill built at the mouth of mam B moth hollow this mill had a capa city tor for reducing tons dally daily a when building this last mill the company piped water from west ti tan tic springs about 25 miles distant L to supply the mill mine and resident amiliea prior to that water for g household and drinking purposes ia had been hauled in barrels and sold at 3 cents per gallon this mill 1 was as S run several years then torn down as it was found more profitable to ship the ore to the salt lake valley smelters the mammoth is a wonderful mine and would supply very sensational reading it if all the facts were publish ed they have shipped at least a 3 dozen cars of ore that brought over each in 1896 one lot of 92 tons tong brought 34 net an other lot of tons of ore brought net in 1907 they sold a ton car to the U S smelting refining fining company which netted them over the S melting smelting company not having sufficient funds in bank offered notes bearing 8 per afi cent interest which mcintyre accept ed stating he would rather have it than a check on the bank the high est gold value ever shown by assay on ore from the mammoth mine to my knowledge was over per ton the highest assay value tor for silver was over 4 per ton it Is characteristic of this ore that rock carrying high values in gold runs lower in silver while rock carrying high values in silver runs lower in gold yet most ot of the ores contain good copper values I 1 was once in a drift of the mine with a member ot of the tile company who showed me a streak of pure gold in the face of the drift running from top to bottom it was an interesting sight to behold As the prices tor for the metals have advanced and the charges of the smelters have been reduced the different mines of can now ship ore formerly considered worthless during the years these changes hava havel taken place the dump at the mammoth haa has been profitably worked over at least six times the workings of the mammoth mine have reached a depth of 2360 feet the ore has been followed and mined from top to bottom this mine and the eureka hill mine are the only ones in the lime belt of where the ore outcropped on the surface the mammoth mine furnishes one more proof that the old DIs brict Is justly entitled to the name of being the greatest producer of high grade ores in this country |
