I heard about the 45 minute games and the caustic community and the complexity of kits and builds and the meta and said "no thank you:" But eventually I relented. I spent five hours downloading League of Legends, watched what ended up being entirely too few tutorials and hopped in the solo queue. And (as was to be expected) I was utterly destroyed. I couldn't figure out why everyone was calling me a "bot',' I wondered what the hell this "gank" was that I was supposed to be watching out for and I was utterly confused as to what the hell a "ward" was. All that aside I kept playing. And playing. When all was said and done, I had about a hundred wins under my belt. I had a champ that I `mained' (Sona FTW). But then I started playing fewer and fewer games with friends and eventually quit altogether. I just couldn't justify nailing myself to a chair for up to an hour just to get my ass kicked by a 12-year-old who never learned how to turn off caps lock. That was two years ago. Jump to six months ago. From time to time I drift through the app store and on this particularly fateful day I stumbled across a game called Vainglory. After some investigation I found that it was a one lane, 3v3 MOBA. I figured, "Hey, it's been a while. Why don't I dip my toes?" The tagline for the game is "The MOBA perfected for touch." I'm inclined to agree. It's still relatively small but simply put, it's airtight. In my opinion it fixes the biggest problems with MOBAs. The games last about twenty minutes. The community is lovely. This was the message of Students Against Sexual Assault's "Slut Walk:' Zak Mahaz, a member of SASA, said the Slut Walk was a response to last year's sexual assault attacks, especially against women. "We wanted to raise awareness to the main issue one needs to memorize is small but diverse. I'm totally hooked. Don't get me wrong, it has its issues. While the lack of a full chat system does hinder team communication, it also keeps the community friendly. In lieu of chat, there is a system of pings that will get the job done nine times out of 10. There are a few characters who are OP but monthly patches and balance fixes keep the game and the meta interesting. What Vainglory most excels at is boiling down a MOBA to its most essential and best elements. Two hubs, two sets of towers, a shop, a lane and a jungle. MOBAs are scary. There's no denying it. They're one of the most complicated game types that exist today, but in a world of blah-shooters, they're also one of the best. While jumping straight into a game of League or DOTA might not be the best idea for newcomers, Vainglory is. It's available now for iPad, iPhone and is currently in beta for android devices. d.wakefield@chronicle.utah.edu SATURDAY SERVICE Celebrate Earth Day this weekend with the Bennion Center's monthly service project on Saturday, April 25 at 9 a.m. Meet at 1030 W. Fremont Ave. in Salt Lake City and help out at the Bend-inthe-River urban green space. of what is truly happening on our campus and many other campuses across the country" Mahaz said. The walk took place on April 21. Students arrived at the event and began making posters with sayings such as, "consent is sexy" and "shame on him, not me." Afterwards, the team, with some members in bodyrevealing clothing, walked through campus to promote their mission. Rachel Jarman, a junior in English, said she attended the event to show her support against disparaging women for their choices in sex. "I feel like slut-shaming is something that hasn't been talked about a lot or even explained to others," Jarman said. "It's important to be educated about all sorts of issues especially one that is such a main problem for everyone:' After the march, victims of sexual assault spoke out about the experience and how to address the issue especially if you are a victim. The speakers encouraged all students who have been in any sexual assault situation to reach out to the Student Wellness Center and told victims that life will get better after the initial horror of sexual assault.
