That said, I think I would have only been even more disappointed with the slavishly expositional output I sat through. The plot revolves around young Ender (Asa Butterfield), who, 5o years after a decisive yet costly victory against invading aliens, is drafted into a training program and must learn to command the fleet against an impending re-invasion. For a story that requires its young protagonist and his youthful colleagues to think in rational and calculated ways, "Ender's Game" severely lacks any sense of the needed traits. The film may have accomplished such a feat if the director portrayed the charac- and Clarifications The headline on the Nov. 6 story, "Funding cuts threaten Myriad" was misleading. Myriad and their research were not directly threatened by the funding cuts. We regret the error. Instead it spends the majority of its time explaining the emotions and motivations behind the characters rather than showing them. It tells the audience how the characters feel and subsequently how the audience should feel. Each character is portrayed to the extreme. No performance is allowed any room to grow within the plot, and therefore no character feels human or relatable. The film had a great cast to boast about, but sadly wasted away a wonderful opportunity to showcase a group of remarkable young actors. With "Hugo" being one of my favorites of 2011, I was excited to see Butterfield get a big role. He honestly does try to inject some layers but is ultimately stifled by a pace disinterested in subtleties. Abigail Breslin and Moises Arias, who are both talented in their own rights, are also misused. Breslin is only in two scenes, which is a shame because her scenes contain some of the best acting in the film. Arias is cast as Bonzo, a remorseless cliched villain and Ender's fellow combat trainee. While I'm glad Harrison Ford has accepted playing a gruff and cranky old man, I wish he would use his star power for better films. Ben Kingsley and Viola Davis are unfortunately there just to spout exposition and beat in the audience's heads with the stakes surrounding Ender. There are interesting ideas and subtexts trying to break out of the film, but because of Gavin Hood's static direction, they never come to fruition. With this and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" as his two films in Hollywood, it's clear he doesn't know how to handle a large budget. As witnessed in the Academy Award winning "Tsotsi," he's much better at handling smaller budgets and more personal stories. It's also clear Hollywood doesn't know what to do with him. d.griffin@chronicle.utah.edu facebook.com/TheChrony Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/TheChrony Now Mork Eimeol ACROSS 1 skirt 5 "The Tao of Pooh" 46 Shiner 47 Milk sources 49 N.B.A. Hall-of- author Benjamin Horoscopes Edited by Will Shortz 2 10 14 One with 17 Earner Walker "Look what I during W.W.
