Show DTI LI( UTAH CHRONICLE 8 JAZZ continued from Page 7 passion when describing Jazz fans. It's the only word that fits. It's what you notice first. The hundreds of jerseys, hats and T-shirts are on display everywhere — from entire families wearing the Jazz colors to the man in a business suit wearing a snapback hat. Utah is routinely named one of the most difficult places to play by media outlets such as ESPN and Sports Illustrated, and it's not because of the altitude. It's the fans. Berating referees for missed calls or antagonizing opposing players endlessly is almost a foregone conclusion. "Portland, Utah and Oklahoma City are three small-market teams that are actually boosted by a true home crowd. Even if I do hate Jazz fans," texted my Montana-raised editor Jake Hibbard as we discussed the nature of the Jazz. This statement of hatred toward fans should be taken as a compliment. A proud moment, ON THE ROAD continued from Page 6 Utah center Jason Washburn is using last week's games as momentum heading into tonight's matchup against the Cardinal. Washburn said the way the Utes competed in their past two games is a good sign but admits it will likely be more difficult playing against knowing that their passion is an annoyance, not just to opposing fans and players, but also to some folks who don't care either way. The glory days of John Stockton and Karl Malone are in the past. Same with the Deron Williams era. But Jazz fans remain. They adapt, even when things don't look as promising. No longer a top seed in the playoffs? Yes, but we're building our young draft picks to be championship contenders, answer most Jazz fans. Even at the game Tuesday night, the Jazz took on the Lebron James-less Cays, which is obviously no longer a marquee game. Yet still they came. They cheered and raved about young Derrick Favors, worshipped the 3o-point performance by Al Jefferson, and found multiple reasons to stand up and high-five family members. Because that's what the Jazz organization is — a family. A family filled with endless optimism. t.patton@ chronicle.utah.edu Thursday, January 12, 2012 browse the news on your cell Mobile web version of The Daily Utah Chronicle Online now available! - 201 E 300 S I 801-519-8900 www.tavernacle.com Daily Utah Chronicle INVITE YOU AND A GUEST TO A SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING liV1419Lt S. "We're going up against two of the tougher teams in the league, and it's not going to be easy," Washburn said. "We were a possession away to beating [Washington], one of the most talented teams in our conference. He's been one of the team's more consistent scoring threats and leads the team with 58 percent shooting from the field. "I take what comes to me," Washburn said. "My teammates have been doing a great job of getting me the ball. I just make the plays. They do the hard part. Any success I have this season is attributed to them." One aspect of his game that is often overlooked is his freethrow shooting ability. He leads the team in free-throw percentage, coming in at just under 8o percent on the season, which allows him to be more aggressive near the hoop. "It's consistency in your form," Washburn said of the key to his success from the stripe. "You've got to develop a good form early, and you've got to practice. It's like anything else: repetition, repetition, repetition." bubba@ chronicle.utah.edu vs 222■224 BRING THIS AD IN ANV NIGHT FOR FREE COVER BUIILOBIG ROOM KI EACIH MSS non IS UM um r !i'iitsrEI MUIR, E SWAM: LAS r NEI F7tY E IRA T 1:15 ING-1111. 11•111111MI Irmo Nil -C ARM Ea 12111, BIN Mt GPIII•INI W' MI. milwr•-• WE 1M/1M 11MW'M FL • •!•4 r.
