Utah governor approving bonds despite debt issues SALT LAKE CITY—Despite concerns about increasing debt, Gov. Gary Herbert will sign a bill authorizing $89 million in bonds. Herbert will hold ceremonial signings of the bill during events Wednesday at college campuses in Layton, Logan and Tooele. The bonds will pay for the construction or remodel of five buildings, including a new state hospital, a new building for the Tooele Applied Technology Center and a professional programs building for the Davis County campus of Weber State University. Herbert will also sign a bill authorizing a new veterinary program at Utah State University. The program will be a partnership with Washington State University. Herbert has said he opposed bonding because he wanted to avoid borrowing, but the timing is right because construction costs are low. CampusBookRentals.com cites several significant growth milestones, including the transfer of its burgeoning business into a new 57,00o-square-foot headquarters in West Haven. The company, started in 2007 by a Weber State University graduate student who noticed fellow students struggling to pay for their texts, now employs 83 people, up from 35 last August. Butte Report: The Chronicle sports editor's blog an you believe it? The BYU Cougars lost out of the tournament seven days ago, and there is a Jimmer Fredette blog in The Daily Utah Chronicle. What's worse is that this is an apology for Jimmer-mania by the Socratic definition. But it really is incredible what Jimmer-mania has done. A week gone from the Big Dance, and his name is still popping up everywhere from columns proudly proclaiming the death of Jimmer-mania to radioheads saying he was exposed as "90 percent media creation, io percent basketball prodigy" to various people jumping to Fredette's defense and everywhere in between. I only address that because it's the necessary context in case you haven't heard about the most recent media developments in "The Great White Hope" starring Fredette. I have no business giving my two cents on the talking heads and their opinions because A) they are the ones making the money in this industry, and B) my opinions are seriously skewed by the fact that I've actually watched Jimmer play all year long. When he put up 52 against New Mexico in the conference semifinals, it was like watching Allen Iverson do his thing with the Sixers—how often does a player get a monkey off his back like he did against the Lobos and break the conference's scoring record? And when he got shut down against Florida to end this amazing run, just like when BYU lost to San Diego State in the conference championship game or when they lost to New Mexico in the regular season, it wasn't an affirmation of his inferiority—it was the result of great containment defense and a testament to just how important Fredette was to his team—without him carrying nearly the entire offensive load, the Cougars were dead in the water.
