"Hopefully, with the help of groups such as Equality Utah and the State Legislature, gay and transgendered students can enjoy the same basic human rights as heterosexual couples." j.thompson@ chronicle.utah.edu continued from Page 1 what defines marriage. Heterosexual couples take many rights for granted, but these same rights are denied to those in same-sex relationships. Only after seeing a lawyer and paying thousands of dollars can same-sex couples begin to enjoy even some of these rights, Mar- Get all your artsu online... 1 hursday, January 15, 2009 MINORITIES continued from Page 1 our nation's racial and ethnic diversity." Thomas Maloney, an associate professor in the economics department, agreed with Perlich's deductions. "Clearly, Utah and the Salt Lake County have become magnets for immigration population," Maloney said, attributing this influx to Utah's strong construction industry, which tends to employ large numbers of immigrants. The study also examined trends in age diversity within Utah, noting that the population rate of older age groups is going to increase. As the baby boomer generation retires and people continue to live longer, the population age 6o and above will soon exceed the youth population. Perlich said this has huge implications for Utah. The next generation of adults will carry the burden of an increased elderly population as well as supporting the highest youth rate per capita of any state in the nation. According to the study, all demographic changes will have dramatic implications. Perlich said she believes Utah needs to focus on building the kinds of cities, housing and social systems that will create a cohesive and supportive society. "This cannot be accomplished by looking backwards," Perlich said. "The structure of our state is no longer the white family with four kids. If we develop our state with that kind of picture in mind, we're setting ourselves up for failure in the future." n.barber@ chronicle.utah.edu continued from Page 1 After the relocation, he expects the new pub to only be able to serve 500 to 600 people. The pub owners intend to dispute the government's compensation and get paid in full for their loss, Knowley said. The remaining tenants above the pub will have their own battles to face. "See there? That window? That's where we live," said waitress Michelle Pearse, pointing at a pair of secondfloor windows. Pearse won't be receiving compensation because she moved into the building within 90 days of the federal eviction notice. She said isn't worried about herself so much as she's worried about her neighbor. Bob Snider, a World War II veteran with severe emphysema, lives alone in his apartment, Pearse said. Knowley only charges Snider $200 a month for rent because he only makes $700 a month. The owners and staff check up on him everyday, Pearse said. Every morning, Snider comes downstairs for a cup of coffee, on the house. He's receiving a few thousand dollars compensation for having lived in the building for 26 years, but will have to move into a home and away from friends and surrogate family that he'll miss dearly, Pearse said. Sherry Blaize, the courthouse's building manager, declined to comment about the expansion. According to the courthouse's Web site, the building is expanding to meet the increasing demands of the courts. m.mcfall@ chronicle.utah.edu FRIDAY ONLY!
