Show JUNE 6, 2001 WASATCH COUNTY COURIER _ A13 Athlete of the Year use the minor leagues to prepare for the big time. Therefore, those that aren't good enough to play for teams like the Provo Angels or Ogden Raptors head off to play college baseball. It really is unfortunate, because baseball at the college level is really entertaining. Hopefully, the same thing won't happen in basketball. The Padre's Ben Davis bunted unexpectedly and reached first-much to the shagrin of many Diamondbacks who had plenty of nasty ine to say about Davis. Supposedly there's an unwritten rule in baseball that players should earn their way on base during a late no-hit performance. _ My response is this: It was a 20 ballgame, and Davis was doing anything he could to help his team win. He even went so far as to say "we'll see if people in Utah come to see the Jazz win or if they come to see exciting basketball". With that said, the Jazz could have a completely different look next season. If I were Scott Padgett or Quincy Lewis, I would be considering a change in career. Don't expect them to: return. Also, don't expect journeyman John Crotty to be back, and I doubt that David Benoit will be on next year's roster. John Starks and Danny Manning may ret return. Additionally, whoever the Jazz draft this year will have a tough time making the team with DeShawn Stevenson seeing time and the young Russian Curelenko finally comingto Utah. With all these open roster spots, it will be interesting to see what road Miller takes. He could try and sign more free agents and make another — gled, and it was perfectly legal. Are the Padres supposed to just stand aside and let Schilling throw a aT fect win?» I say do what it takes to jak win, no matter what the "unwritten rules" say.
