Show 1999 WASATCH COUNTY COURIER 4 x Olympic Venue May — Become Sam Allen, Ski. Resort | Courier Staff . Thom Perkins, a director of the largest cross country ski resort in the U.S., gave a breakfast presentation on— October 28, during which he discussed the possibilities of turning the Soldier Hollow Olympic venue in Wasatch ‘County into a cross country ski resort after the Olympics. This resort would have groomed trails and would charge ‘modest fees to its visitors. ness interests. Instead, he came as a favor to. a friend. After reviewing the venue, Perkins concluded that turning it into a resort has many upsides and few drawbacks for the community. Since cross country skiing is a very low impact sport, it would generate a differ- . ent kind of atmosphere and culture than is normally found at a downhill ski resort. According to Perkins, it is very unlikely — He believes it would create an environthat the Soldier Hollow Olympic venue ~ ment that. would be conducive towards can become self-sufficient after the family activities. He also believes it Olympics unless it is also supported by would attract visitors from all over the another business that makes use = of the world since Soldier Hollow has one of venue’s facilities. the best trail systems in the world. Bob Mathis, the Olek: Coordinator In the summer, Mathis believes the part for Wasatch County, has been. moving forward with plans to create a. private - foundation much like the one Perkins’ manages in New Hampshire. This 501-c3 corporation would manage the trails and use revenue that is generated from visitors to. support a variety for local youth groups of programs and aspiring ath-- letes. It is unlikely that any resort would become operational until 2003 when the ‘Olympics are over. It all depends on construction schedules and whether or not the resort would complement SLOC’ S existing plans for the facility. Perkins estimates the economic impact of — a cross country ski resort upon the com~ munity would be approximately four to five million dollars a year. With ye a iaeske like Mathis believes it will take a lot of community support in order to get a non- profit foundation set up properly. It will also have to be authorized and supported by local and state government entities, as well as business groups in the area. % This Weeks Winner! a aa Ss | é Adie ‘ Bas Zip: Phone 1 ee _ Phone 5: Find the oe , ‘Here’ Ss How To Win’ 50 Bucks! & ; z ‘State: | City; oe Mingos.
