Show Page 2- WASATCH CANYON REPORTER, November 9-22, 1994 Letters to the Editor: Editorial ___.by John Bresee Tomorrow | meet with Scott Markewitz, god of the — lens and shutter. One year ago | was scrubbing _ dishes in the basement of the Cliff Lodge and damn glad to have the job. It is amazing where a year of — lead. A year ago if | had met Scott Markewitz | would have said “I love your work, | am your biggest fan.” | plan on saying the same thing tomorrow, only | hope he will in turn kick down some bargain pice tures for this fledgling publication. | started thinking about creating a newspaper in the Wasatch during my first year in Alta. Bush was bombing the hell out of Baghdad, and Peter Arnott was telling us that Martial Law was in place in lrag, and no one was allowed out of their homes. In Alta it was dumping four inches an hour and we were interlodged. The bombs were dropping hard and fast in Alta while we watched the strafing of Baghdad. It was surrealism worthy of Dali, and the moment was broken only by Paul Warschilka saying, “Whoa...Baghdad’s interlodged!” | was young, naive, and awed by this strange, beautiful, and dangerous canyon. | wanted to tell the world about this place ten thousand feet above the earth where people casually lived with the threat of ungodly avalanches, and the true loques didn’t even ~ flinch as 105 howitzer shells whistled into the hills. Now | am older, and | try not to flinch with the bomb blasts, and instead of trying to tell the world about the greatness of the Cottonwood Canyons, | want to create a way that we can tell each other stories that we live each day. This newspaper will appear every two were through the season until the tram stops running _ Skiers to the top. We are here to talk to each other about what we are doing. This means if you have any kind of a story to tell about life in the Wasatch, then we are listening. In this first issue Tyson Bradley relates his © amazing experiences on Wickersham Wall and how they pertain to his experiences in the Wasatch. Solitude takes a wise and bold step accepting snowboarders. Felicia Olivera, staff reporter, writes of the complexities facing the Rustler Run mountain bike race. Ms. Olivera also reviews the Lodge Club at — - Snowbird. The issue of fast mountain bikes once again resurfaces in an article written by Matt Osborne regarding the new mountain bike speed limit in Alta. The actual impact of this law won't be seen until spring. Kristen Ulmer tells us of the exciting changes going on at Wolf Mountain. We hope we have crafted a paper that is useful to tourists and residents alike. On this front we will have to wait to hear from you. Please call or write and let us know your impressions of the paper. We hope to become an accurate reflection of the canyons' lifestyle. | Special note to Big Cottonwood Residents.
