And its president, Dr. Manfred Shaw, hopes this slogan is indicative of the type of student it graduates. and philosophical. Dr. Shaw states, We are living in a technical age when one man can push the button and destroy the world. We dont need a technical genius at the button. We need a humanitarian. Soft-spok- Utah's smallest college, pocketed near a grassy ravine on Salt Lakes east bench, Westminster appears aloof from instituthe hectic pressures of tions. Students take a steady diet of liberal courses such as religion, philosophy, and world civilization. Before a student d d may graduate he must prepare a written paper describing his own philosophy of life. Our main problem does not lie with student rebellion or dissent, Like' most private colleges says Dr. Shaw. throughout the country, we are faced with financial problems. Students complain about the tuition and yet this sum covers only half the cost of educating a student. Every student enters Westminster with a 50 per cent scholarship. The financial bind came into focus this spring when d about of the college faculty resigned, primarily because of low salaries. (A language teacher with a doctorate was paid less than a plumber). Mrs. Janet Booth, chairman of the English department, stated, The ability of getting to know your students personally on a friendship basis and the knowledge that you can in- See COLLEGE on Page 7 Hasn't Hurt Cedar 15 By JIM ROBINSON Deseret News Staff Writer CEDAR CITY - Despite the first full summer of being bypassed by Interstate 15 and despite extensive road work on Main Street, Cedar City is enjoying an outstanding tourist season. Business varies, of course, with individual merchants, but generally the tourist season rates between good and banner year. .Last year and this year are probably the two best summers we one downtown have had, merchant said.
