for another: 50 years has been heW up for further con sideration by the Ogden City Council Councilman C Austin Seager suggested the Council give the matter further study "I have often wondered whether the handful of industries serviced by the trains justifies the incon venlences caused motor traffic1 he said He pointed out that the freight trains cross more! than seven or eight city intersections getting to and from the four or five spurs that service industries located generally between 24th Street and the Ogden River Mr Seager also noted that the proposed renewal 'was accom panied by a fee of $200 "Is that enough for privileges?" he asked VIEWPOINT OPPOSED Seager was practically alone in his views however Mayor Ray mond S Wright said many cities would be "very happy to have a railroad service running into their industrial areas" and Councilman Mary Woolley added the area al j i - 50-ye- ready is either industrial or ed that way ar head- I "Lincoln Avenue lias always been the railroad route through Ogden like Wall Avenue is the city's truck route" she said City Manager E J Allison com menting on the small franchise fee required observed that rail road service has! a close bearing on industrial expansion an impor tant goal in Ogden right now IMPORTANT TO CITY Councilman Seager said he was aware of the line's importance to industry and that he- held no grudge against the Bamberger company "Still I think we should think it over and see if there s some-thin- c we can do to avoid some of the inconveniences automobile traffic is experiencing" he said Request for the renewal was ©resented by John Snow Salt Lake City lawyer He called at tention to the fact the present three franchises expire in Oc tober The prof f erred franchise combines the agreements con tained in the expiring set of three Mr Snow said J - j Approximately 2500 persons will be engaged in handling the crop in North Davis and Weber counties at the peak of the season according to Robert S Welch manager of the Utah State Employment Service Office in Ogden Of this number between 1000 and 1200 will be "new hires" or persons whoj have not been employed before by the company for which they go to work Many of them also will be working in the fields picking tomatoes or transporting them to canneries WORK YEAR AROUND Only about 250 people in the area have jobs in the canneries Mr Welch said Many workers especially the women engaged in peeling the tomatoes return to the job each fall for the! season which rurs from three weeks to more than a month and a half depending upon the coming of the first killing ld K-2-7 all-expen- 2 Local ROTC ' $f plan The city manager was criticized at a recent meeting of the Ogden Board of Education because the street is being made 40 feet wide instead of 80 as desired by the board Dr T O Smith superintendent of schools told the school board the city had agreed to make the street wide and the schools had dedicated 40 feet of for that purpose The board felt an street was warranted by the 'volume of traffic the street will handle during the school year The board also considered a two-foside to side drop in the elevation of the street a safety hazard especially during the winter when it may be covered with ice and snow PREPARED BY PLANNERS In a letter read l!othe Council Allison said the master street m t N year-aroun- d v 60-fe-et A Vc- &
