Show HONOR THE PIONEERS the news took occasion to say something editorially upon the fact that the sturdy band of pioneers who laid the foundations of this commonwealth is swiftly being decimated and in just a short while they will all be gone to their well earned rest now comes a prominent citizen and asks what has become of tho the movements movement started some years ago for the installation stal lation ot of a monument to that noble band and in the course of the discussion on the matter this public spirited individual stated that ho he had some money to contribute to such a mark of respect t and ex expressed pre ased it as aa hla his opinion that brigham CRY city owes to the pioneers of this section that much recognition along in this connection not a few ew of the men who have lived in brigham many years haye have expressed ithe nir selves as heartily in favoron favo such a movement and stand ready to contribute of their means to tho the end that a fitting monument may be erected at a point in the tha center of the city where it can be been seen by all who ever come to brigham As to just what kind of a monument ought to be erected these veterans have but one notion and that it should represent the he late lorenzo snow in figure with whatever grouping may be considered appropriate in support ot of this contention they point to the fact that lorenzo snow was to brigham city and this part of the state of utah what brigham young was to the entire state the fo foun derand pioneer and in placing his figure upon a pedestal in bronzo or marble he would not alone bo be lio honored nored but the entire company of first settlers would be immortalized and that too in the most fitting manner that could be devised we believe as we contended when the matter was given some agitation somo some years ago that brigham city owes it to the men and women who laid the foundations of the city to perpetuate their memory in somo some such manner as this we further believe that if the matter was taken up with a determination to bring it to a successful issue it would be surprising how many citizens of the community would rally to its support who is there with appreciation so dulled that lie he does not feel a debt ol of gratitude or something more substantial to the m men en and women who made it possible that we today may enjoy the comforts and blessings that we do we cannot repay those who have gone neither can we repay the few who ara still with us but we can show our appreciation to them all by erecting a bonu ment to their memory and we ought to do it while yet there are some remal remaining n to witness the consummation of the labor of love for our part we would like to sae see a splendid monument standing on main alain street with the face of the figure turned to gaze down forest street |
