Jensen It shouldnt have been such a surprise. After all, we had a hint weeks we awoke to early morning, as ago mists drifting through the crevices of the nearby hills. It was the cool, iced breath of Autumn hinting of its arrival, even though the day warmed to its usual 90 plus temperature. Last night temperatures dropped, and snow was reported at Fish Lake and other mountain areas. Those fighting the Y cllowstonc fires were pleased with the snowfall that occurred there. Our valley has been busy with the unending chores of summer. Planting and nurturing fields of alfalfa, corn and grains to maturity; ranchers driving their cattle to the high mountain pastures; coaxing gardens to grow and battling weeds everywhere. Now gardens are full and overflowing. Neighbors share in our bounty. Autumns frosty touch has likely blackened some of the more tender crops, and though Indian Summer days will surely follow, the coolness of the night air will remind us that summer has gone. I love the harvest season, and Im glad for my beginnings. My family believed in putting and up putting by, so that no matter how harsh Winters reign might be, we were prepared. All summer we tended the garden and orchard, and August and September saw rows of shining jars filled with their bounty aligned on storeroom shelves. Root cellars were filled; - apples wrapped; pickles, preserves, jams and jellies awaited their turn to grace the winter table. Grain filled the granary, potatoes waited in the bin. Let winter come. We were ready! The changing season spreads slowly through the valley. Soon the summer world of green will be gone. Summer birds take training flights in skimming circles, and biologists say that the dove and other species have already begun their annual migration. Geese arc beginning to pass through on the fly way to their southern winter habitat Autumn storms sail through the valley. The wind whirls and sighs through the trees with a melancholy sound. On stormy days, if I had my druthers, Id stoke up the fireplace, fix a cup of lemon or sage tea and toast my toes as I watch the storm growl by. I might reach for a good book and sink into the pages, forgetting time as the story unfolds. Springs urgency has gone and the ripeness of Summer fades. We await the extravagant, boisterous entrance of Autumn in all its colorful glory. Nothing ever really ends in Nature. As one season draws to a close, comes the new beginnings of all the seasons yet to be. Lets enjoy them all.
