The tree was brought from the Linden Gardens in Germany. Cedar Crest Lodge Has Rich History by Brace nostalgic memory of the houses of the German nobility built upon the crags and among the trees on mountain slopes. And so Charles and Emerett built their home-n- ot a castle on Jennings There are some who still remember. Perhaps there are one or two who still live to remember the day in 1878 when 11 people drowned at Funks Lake. Perhaps those one or two remember the coffins by the mulberry tree on the grounds where the Ephraim Library now stands and the slow procession to the Pioneer Cemetery. Undoubtedly there are more in Ephraim and Manti and Sterling who remember the steamboat on the lake, the excursions by the Sanpete Railroad (alias the Sanpete Creeper), the dancing and boating and fishing. Charles is also remembered as a salesman of trees and shrubs and other plants who, as a kind of Sanpete Johnny Appleseed, helped to found countless farmlot orchards in the towns of the valley. nd But perhaps Charles Emerett, one of the daughters of that Daniel Buckley Funk who built a place he named Eagle Park, later called Funks Lake and still later Palisade State Park, are best remembered for the tree they planted and the house they built. Both the tree and the house in had their beginning Charless mission to Germany. He brought back with him from Germany a tiny tree from the Linden Gardens. He also brought home a Kelsch, purchased the Linden House in 1955. In the 20 years since that purchase, in their spare time from their lives in Salt Lake City, they have built upon the foundations laid down by Daniel Buckley and continued by his descendants. They have beautified the surrounding with plantings and have maintained the pioneer atmosphere while building and remodelling. Cedar Rhoda Kelsch says. Funk was a man of vision and had a dream. President Brigham Young encouraged him in his dream. He was also a practical man. And so he built the dam and impounded the waters, planted the trees, constructed cabins and a dance pavilion.
