BYU is operated by the Mormon Church and is the univerlargest church-relate- d sity in the United States. Its College of Biological and Agricultural Sciences and College of Family Living have been involved for a number of years in research projects to help underdeveloped countries and undernourished peoples around the world. Projects have included an extensive agricultural education and nutrition program among Indians in Guatemala, development of new grains and better cattle feed, improvement of nitrogen fixation in plants, and development of alternative, economical protein sources for countries which are deficient in these areas. Much of the research is being carried on in laboratories at e BYUs campus and on e the Universitys farm near Spanish Fork, Utah. Other work is being done on site in Total taxes property charged by all units of Utah local government in 1975 will be $207,300,000. This is $26,209,-86- 0 or 14.5 more than it was last year. This is the largest increase in the states history, said Jack Olson of the Utah Taxpayers Association. $9.6 million of the total $26 million will be bourne by Salt Lake County taxpayers. Olson blamed the County Assessor land and the arbitrary 25 value adjustment for most of this year's Salt Lake County jump. UTA labeled the increase a $10 million taxpayer f hidden under the smokescreen of equalization. The tax figures were revealed today in the Associations annual comprehensive report on property tax levies and estimated collection for 1975. The forty school districts of will use $126 million, or 61 the total $207.3 million charged. County government will of take $41.7 million, or 20 the total. All together tlieie are levies for moie than 212 cities and towns, 40 school districts, 29 counties and 139 special taxing districts. Salt lake County alone has 44 difterent units of government that levy taxes on propert) owners The complexity and pyramiding of property taxes is like a three layer marble cake. That is what makes it difficult for the taxpayer to understand property taxes and react intelligent- their tax rates. Cache County Central America A Southwestern United States. All of these projects and many others will now be focused under the new institute, President Oaks said. Results of the research will be carried around the globe by the Mormon Churchs worldwide health missionary and welfare services programs. President Oaks noted that overpopulation in the world need not be a problem if proper agriculture and nutrition technology is developed and applied. Of all the arable land in the world, 4.4 billion acres are not being used but could be if better irrigation and cultivation practices are developed and used. With these resources of the University and the contributions of funds, the technology exists for us to produce food for all mankind. It is just a matter of will, President Oaks said. Dr. Benson is a native of Whitney, Idaho. He graduated with honors from BYU and obtained his masters degree at Iowa State College. Later he did graduate work at the University of California. He has received 11 honorary degrees. He served during his career in a number of state and national agricultural capacities and was appointed U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in 1952. He held that post for eight years. As president of the Council of the Twelve of the Mormon Church, he is the ranking apostle. He has been a member of the Council for 32 years. Dr. Wood has been on the BYU faculty since 1969. He obtained his masters degree at Montana State University and his doctorate at the University of California at Berkeley. The agreement, known as the Treaty, gave the U.S. all the rights, powers, and authority within the zone . . . which the United States would possess and exercise if it were the in perpetusovereign of the territory . . The treaty still stands. ity We then paid Panama $10 million for the Canal Zone, built and paid for the Canal, gave Panama an annual sum (now up to $1,930,000 each year), and have successfully run the Canal since its completion in 1914. Over the years, Panamas politicians have complained about various provisions of the treaty, especially U.S. control over the Canal Zone. As part of a general trend of throughout Latin America, demonstrations challenging our presence in the e Zone were conducted in 1959, and riots broke out in 1964. n .. ... full-scal- Uncle Sam Begins To Cave In After the riots in 1964, President Johnson negotiations and eventually a new treaty.
