The Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game Commission was named winner of the 1975 Hunter Education Award. Donator of the awards was the National Rifle Association. A panel of experts from the 1AGFCC, the Federal Government and the North American Association of Safety Coordinators selected Kansas from a field of candidates representing 34 states and Canadian provinces. Other states receiving honorable mention for excellence in the hunter safety field were Maine, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee and the province of Monitoba. Wiscon-- ' sin, Missouri and Colorado, first prizewinners in 1974, 1973 and 1972 respectively, were ineligible for the competition this year. New York State initiated the first hunter safety training in 1949 in close cooperation with the National Rifle Association. Early Hunt Reports Encouraging Reports indicate most of Utahs big game hunts have been rewarding to nimrods. Four of the five moose permit holders on the Ogden River unit brought home bulls; while, so far, 16 of the 20 permittees on the Uinta North Slopes report success. Two of the five bighorn sheep permit holders took rams, although all hunters reported sighting sheep. One hunter passed up a legal ram because it was collared for a Division of Wildlife Resources research project. The largest ram taken scored 164 points on Boone and Crockett measurements and was the second largest ever taken in the state. The ram was ten years old and had worn down most of its teeth. The animal probably wouldn't have survived the winter, said Rodney John, Division big LET US MAKE ALL THE ARRANGEMENTS! The other animal, which was seven years old, scored 157 68 points, making it a good trophy animal, also. The largest ram taken in Utah was harvested in 1967 and scored 168 points. Field checks on the Parker mountain antelope unit showed 80 percent success, with good hunts also reported on Icelander Wash, Hatch Point and San Rafael Desert. Thirteen archery elk hunters report success so far, according to John, which indicates it was a pretty successful hunt, perhaps better than last year. In 1974, 16 elk were taken during the archery season. Following is a letter I have written to Mr. Merwyn D. Riddle concerning the industrial park in Manti. I believe it would be helpful to our cause if the letter were published. Dear Mr. Riddle: I am writing you in an unofficial capacity as a retired Manti businessman; also a former mayor of Manti for four terms. I was born and raised here, and have always been concerned with the welfare of the town and the people who live here. In the past fifty years 1 have operated a retail clothing store in Manti, during which time I have seen many opportunities for growth come and go. In 1960, I was the first President of the Manti Business Improvement Association. The Association raised $30,000 in public subscriptions, and in Dear Editor: Bruce is In his article, Larry Stahle failed to Busy, mention two of my most important retirement endeavors: 1.
