Show 4Manti Messenger Enterprise Thursday, September 4, 1975 The Great American Face What is the Great American Face? There have been many ideas about the subject and you probably could get a fair degree of argument before the question is resolved. Does it belong to your kid sister, who once played Nefertiti in the school play? Many Americans believe The Great American Face has no specific age. Maybe it belongs to your Aunt May who reminds everyone of Grandma Moses. Or to your younger brother, whose freckles are a joy to behold. It could even belong to your Uncle Al, whos a regular Warren Harding lookalike. Faces the true index of the heart. Much has been written about them. By region, reports on the hunt are as follows: Northern Region Jim Ware, northern regional years hunt conservation officer, reports hunter success was low, even though most hunters reported seeing deer and getting shots. Lots of does and fawns were seen, he noted. Even though about the same number of bowmen went afield, they shifted in their hunting areas this year, said Ware. "Hunting pressure increased on the North Slopes of the Uinta Mountains, but decreased on the Cache herd unit, he explained. Northeastern Region About the same number of hunters as in 1974 were reported by Clair Huff, northeastern regional supervisor. Pressure was heaviest on herd unit 23 B, east of Strawberry Reservoir, and in the Book tion Officer Clark Warren. He reported a large number of fawns were sighted. The number of hunters in the Manti-LaSa- l Mountains in the southeastern corner of the state was down, and hunting success there was poor. Success was down on the Manti Mountains. Gentry Mountain was pointed to as a good spot, with success probably up from 1974. Far fewer hunters were reported on the Range Creek area, but success there was good. Southern Region The number of hunters in the southern region was up from last year according to Regional Game Biologist Paul Tervort. As many deer or more as last year were sighted, he said. And more does with fawns were seen. Poor weather in that region restricted access for a portion of the hunt. "In general, the hunt here was slower than usual, concluded Tervort. Both are among prime targets in the Societys programs to reach people with sight saving information. Other major programs include preschool vision screening. An estimated one in twenty children in the year age range has a vision problem, and some common eye disorders require treatment before the age of six if vision is to be effectively preserved. In community programs the Society screened almost a quarter of a million preschoolers last year. Eye safety has long received emphasis because accidents too often lead to needless impairment of vision or loss of sight. To encourage the public to safeguard vision, the Society promotes the Wise Owl Club, an incentive program encouraging the use of safety eyewear in industry and schools; school eye safety model legislation which has been enacted into law by 35 states; advocation of fireworks and toys regulation; and an program of warning about harmful substances in the home. The fact that of the 45,000 new cases of blindness this year (150 in Utah) half will be needless underlines the importance of the organizations programs and the need for more of them. Month. Have you ever really thought about it? How much are your eyes worth? If youre like most people, you probably cant put a price on your vision, because its just too precious. The National Society, now in its 67th year, is the oldest voluntary health agency rationally engaged in programs to preserve sight and promote good eye health and safety practices. It serves Utah and 21 other state affiliates. Preventing blindness and conserving sight are positive approaches. To prevent a disease or accident, rather than treat it after it has occurred, is a much more practical, economical workable solution to effective health care. This is especially true where vision is concerned because once sight is lost, all too often it cannot be restored. For prevention of blindness, the success rate must be millions upon millions of cases. Most of them can never be documented. Some of them can. For example, discovering early signs of glaucoma when treatment will be most successful and so preventing blindness when a person is found to have glaucoma and treatment is begun early before the disease has progressed to ultimate blindness. Or w hen a person who has lost sight from cataracts regains his vision through surgery. glaucoma and cataract, are estimated level of $364 in the year 2000. Lee Robertson. Thirteen hunting accidents were reported last year, one less than in 1974, the previous record breaking year. Robertson attributes the downward accident trend to new hunter safety training materials which were introduced three years ago. At that time, he and training officers from several states worked together to edit and revamp the reading material to a student reading level. Previously, the training material had been geared to the adult level, he explained. The program in Utah was begun in 1957, thus persons being trained now are mostly between 11 and 13 years of age. Robertson noted it is important that students enroll immediately if they wish to participate in this falls hunts. Training normally takes from four to six weeks. A minimum of ten hours, including tests and range qualification firing, is required for all persons under 21 years of age who wish to hunt. September and early October is the heaviest training period of the year, noted Robertson. Interested persons should contact their local conservation officer or Division of Wildlife Resources office now to learn time and place of hunter safety classes.
