It flows softly see Important (page 4) Building Safe Communities by Jacob Brace This past August 7th, we celebrated another National Night Out Against Crime in many communities throughout the United States. Supported by many neighborhoods and_ agencies, National Night Out Against Crime seeks to raise awareness of the simple approaches to preventing crime, heighten community pride, and send the message to criminals that there is a united front objecting their criminal activity. In the Fairpark, Poplar Grove and Glendale neighborhoods, residents were It is truly a wonderful event when ALL people of our communities can come out and enjoy a gathering of festivities in a safe and secure environment. We are encouraged to get to know not only our neighbors to the left and right of our front doors, but also those neighbors across the way facing our front doors, and those neighbors overlooking our back doors. When we know the names and recognize the faces of people living all around us and when we engage in communal gatherings more frequently, we began to foster the true nature of being a encouraged to turn on their porch lights in support of "taking back their communities." There were also multiple gatherings in these neighborhoods where residents enjoyed food, entertainment and had the opportunity to community. This also allows for us to be more aware of what is happening on our block, who is coming in and out of our neighborhood and, consequently, enabling us to protect our community from unwanted criminal activity. National Night Out Against Crime is an excellent event to remind us of the important role each of us plays in preventing community crimes. As we learn who are neighbors are and how to eliminate potential criminal environments, we spread the message that this community is safe, ered to secure and help empow- protect meet some of the dedicated, valued officers and fire fighters of the area.
