Nttmbijr 7, lt7 Salt Lake and Intermountain Area Obituaries Westminster Goal: Teach Life Value A marriage of training and to in education assure that students not only are prepared for careers but are taught the values of life was proposed Thursday by Dr. Alunford A. Shaw, Westminster College president. ' Speaking at a student convocation marking the opening of the college's school year. Dr. Shaw defended the traditional concepts of liberal arts education, but noted also that education must prepare students for adaptation to one or several career chjnges during their lifetimes. philosophy Nearly 800 stedents and faculty members attended the convocation in the college amphitheater. Westminster ofthis ficials said enrollment year is expected to exceed 800 students, compared to 735 last , .spring. Classes Begun Although Westminster I classes began Thursday, the college will continue student registration for the next several days. Dr. Shaw told the convocation too many students entering colleges end up with a life even drab, unexciting 'though they receive diplomas that proclaiai them to be educated. -- ' " It is their fault and our fault that their passions and Ideals are not related to their learning or that their life's George E. Larsen FARMINGTON Lor-veEdwin How 74, 83 S 350 Eost, died woik did not have an exciting relationship to a service to their fellow men, Dr. Shaw said. Lack Moral Conviction He said the lack of moral conviction shown in the "parade of bright young men in the current Watergate matter must be considered an indictment of the nations educational process. Their high degree of knowledge taught them only that the end justifies the means. They did not learn this philosophy of life from the study of the words of Socrates or Pope John," Dr. Shaw said. No Hodgepodge Defending Westminsters role as a liberal arts college, he said the school seeks to insure that its studerts are. not solely intellectual theorists, or career opportunists and that their learning is not a hodgepodge of information that has no relationship to theu future. He said school has done much to make the marriage of philosophy and career training possible, but called on members and stufaculty dents to bnng a closer relationship between the disciplines so that the end result will be a total concept of life and of the world and not just a transcript record of a spat- tenng of knowledge m a long list of subjects home o f 11. beth ick Broder- Married - Survivors- widow; daugh- Homes and City. llom, chapel, Funeral Saturday, Bountiful Lmdauist where friends coll Friday 6 8 before p m. and Soturdoy services Burial Farmington City Cemetery. Shriner Hospitals Ponder Problems To better coordinate our wide activities and solve prob-- . is the lems at our hospitals basis for the annual meeting Thursday and Friday of 22 'Stumers Hospital administrators at their Salt Lake City facility, the Shnners Hospital For Crippled Children, Fairfax Ave. and Virginia St. Haney E. Beffa, chairman of the Shnners Hospital board, and Eleanor Baird, executive administrator of all the facilities, coordinated the .group. Mr. Beffa said since the first Shnners Htjspital was started in 1922 the Salt Lake facility went into operation in 1925 We (the Shnners) have Reined or cured almost 200,000 .children. ' Public Relations Need Miss Baird said a major issue at this years meet is mostly per-- I public relations to letting people taming ;know about our work. The Shnners operate 16 orthopedic i hospitals and three burn units in the Umted States, two hospitals in Canada and one in Mexico City. Both Miss Baird and Mr. Shnner , Beffa stressed that I medical facilities are open, to any child regardless of race, Screed or religion at no cost to ; , ;the childs parents. ' Miss Baird, who works out of Chicago, 111., described the an as staffs hospital extremely optimistic group" , a couple from Idaho U S , commented that their son, fiorn a enppling disease in both hips, really enjoys the Shnners Hospital atmosphere and the nurses make it much easier when he has to come to the hospital. suf-fen- Story Prevalent Beffa Mr. commented, This type of story is prevalent throughout the hospitals, and noted that the annual meetings help administrators to better sene all the public. Miss Baird said a program designed to help parents cope with their child after he leaves the hospital has been m operation for some time. But these yearly meetings make it for administrators possible from all the hospitals to air their ideas, vXpenences and problems. Then its possible for all of us to reach the best solutions and develop the best programs, she said. This years operating budget, Mr. Beffa declared, is $29 million And it all comes from fellow Shnners, events which althey sponsor and Theres ways some grateful parents, relatives and people who care that provide funds," the hospital chairman said.
