But Dunns River Falls in Ja-- t maica, is the active mans waterfall because you not only look at it, you climb it. Dunns River Falls comes tumbling out of the green- in : carpeted mountains, rushing over the rocks (and occasionally over the tourists), until it spills at last into the sea on the rim of Jamaica's north shore. A SECTION of the falls, near its final spasm, has been cordoned off for the mounpleasure of wet-fotaineers who can climb up the boulders, stopping now and then for a dunk in the cool fresh-wate- r pools. The rocks make easy platforms on which to step, and climbers can assist themselves by grabbing the trunk of handy trees that grow in the crevices. Unlike the Matterhorn, no equipment is necessary, and no special clothes either. A bathing suit and bare feet will do, although some experienced falls hikers bring old sneakers which they SITMAR CRUISES 7 DAY$ V. It is even possible to hire a barefoot guide to lead the way from the beach o the highest allowable boulder. The guides know the best routes, the water slides to be found on the way; and they only charge a quarter for the trip. THE HEIGHTS above Dunns River Falls can also be explored by horseback coursing through the deep green countryside. Down or the beach, once a week, there is a giant Dunns River Falls Feast, or in Jamaican a terminology, boonoonoonoos. The ticket of admission is no special bargain at about $12 per person (U.S. dollars), but that stiff levy includes an all bar, a vast of Jamaican-styl- e table foods, music and dancing. A more serene life is ensured in the splendid open country of St. Anns which is an easy excursion from Ocho Rios, winding through the green canyon known as Fern Gully. Here the foliage forms a canopy, rather like a green Italian galleria, shaded, cool and even a little mysterious. Suddenly, the ferns are exgone and the rent-a-ca- r will in find himself plorer open country, green and rolling, divided by rock walls that were built in slave days. Here the English colonials settled, perhaps because the land reminded them of Devon. They built great houses some of which still stand. BUT DEVON is not Jamaica. For one thing it has no giant cotton trees with their enormous trunks and huge spreading branches, sitting in majesty in the emerald fields. The cotton trees, as any Jamaican will tell you, are the traditional home of the duppies, spirits who live in their branches and emerge only at niglt. Even now, when cutting down a cotton tree to make a dugout canoe, the woodsmen may do a little dance around the trunk, sprinkle a little rum around the roots, and assure the resident duppies that the canoe is required for the good works of mortal man.
