Show ITS NOT enough to recite funny lines, to go through the motions. . .You have to make contact. To me, thats what acting is all about. Gary Burghoff feels strongly that many viewers do make contact with his character of Radar on the CBS-TMASH series. Any guy whos been in the military relates," Burghoff says. Radar is the in the group only and when something needs to be done, hes the one who usually does it. Most people relate to the because its like trying to deal with the system any system. You wont find many young actors who admit enjoying the kind of public attention that brings fans up to them on the city streets just to say, Hello. THE RAPPORT is something I really want and I seem to need, Burghoff admits. Personally, I love it when someone comes up to me and says, Hey, caught the show last night and you were great! Intellectually, Id like to be the kind of guy who withdraws into. his shell of home and family privacy and doesnt need the attention. But, to me, acting is more than just doing. Anderson funny gags and making audiences laugh. I want to reach out and touch people. Part of what is work for me is that through my acting, I should be able to bring to people something of themselves. I have always believed a good teacher should be able to offer the student a mirror in which he sees an image of himself. The mirror, however, has to be clear and per-fato give an accurate reflection. Honest contact is more than a platitude learned in an idealistic acting school for the wry stocky, humored actor. Its an absolute must in life, he says simply, without unctious-nes- s or pedantry. TWO PEOPLE, he offers, his hands extended as if to cup the concept, must strip away the facade and say whats really there. When I first came on this series, for instance, I used to run to- producer Gene Reynolds when I had a problem with a director. Then I realized that Gene isn't on the set all the time and he wouldnt relate to my problems. I had to take them to the director involved. One guy was swell personally, but I couldnt take his directing. We just didnt click in any way. Finally I went to him and told him, Look, I get. the feeling youre trying to do my acting for me. Tell me if Im wrong, but I cant wort under those circumstances. HE THANKED mr for telling him and said ths t, as a matter of fact, hed had problems relating to other actors, but no one had bothered to explore the problem until I did. Things worked out much better after that because we both had a better understanding of the situation. I guess what frightens us from leveling with one another is the fear that the other guy will chew our heads off or call us Stupid. - 000 isnt as a youngster as he may seem when quoted in print.
